Adele returns to Instagram 0:41

(CNN) - Adele has always loved the skin she inhabits.

When she first appeared with her debut album "19" in 2008, the British singer was criticized for being oversized.

Then she lost weight, but apparently it was not enough by some people's standards.

In 2012, famous fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld apologized after allegedly calling the multiple Grammy winner "a little fat."

Adele replied back.

"I've never wanted to look like the models on magazine covers," Adele, then 23, told People magazine . "I represent the majority of women and I am very proud of that," she added.

Around the same time, he discussed body image with CNN's Anderson Cooper during an interview on "60 Minutes": He shared that he never felt pressure to look a certain way.

"I've never seen magazine covers and music videos and I've thought, 'I want to look like this if I want to be successful,'" she explained.

In the following years, Adele climbed to even greater heights as an artist. She also became a mother, married and divorced.

In a photo published on Instagram this Wednesday to celebrate her birthday, Adele, now 32, appears slimmer than ever since she became famous.

As a society we love a before and after when it comes to our stars. Every transformation of a celebrity, physical or otherwise, often leads to our public assessment of whether it is a good or bad thing. But does praising Adele's current appearance in any way criticize how she looked before? Or are we simply recognizing the transformation?

With celebrities, it seems that many feel they have the right to comment more freely about them because we buy their music or watch their movies. We know them but we don't know them, so what is the harm in sharing opinions about them?

But Adele's body belongs to her. How you choose to see yourself is also your business and is not a reflection of your art, outstanding talent, or professional accomplishments. She has sold millions of albums, had four hits at No. 1 on the Billboard, won 15 Grammys, and filled countless stadiums, all while being multiple sizes.

Yes, Adele has lost weight. But up or down the scale, she is still a beautiful woman who creates art.

"There are bigger problems in the world than how I feel about myself and things like that," Adele replied about her body image in a 2015 interview.

Amen, Adele. Amen.
