  • The AfD candidate Karsten Hilse * failed for the third meal in the election as Bundestag Vice President
  • Hilse is not the first candidate of the right-wing populist party
  • A new start must now be agreed

Berlin - The AfD fails again in the election as Bundestag Vice President . The AFD -Abgeordnete Karsten's help was on Thursday even as a fifth candidate of the right-wing populists of the deputy office for election. But once again the occupation of the post failed at the ballot box. The Saxon politician Hilse received only 129 votes in the election. A total of 501 MPs voted against him, 26 abstained.

The MPs had a full five hours to vote on Thursday. The reason for this is the distance rules in the corona pandemic . Therefore, the vote did not take place in the plenary hall, but in the parliamentary lobby. In this sense, shaking hands is strictly prohibited. In the AfD , which has repeatedly spoken out against the corona restrictions, this ban appears to be ignored. Because according to “Handelsblatt” Hilse and his party colleague Paul Podolay shook hands demonstratively before the meeting.

For Hilse , a police officer from Saxony, it was already the third ballot - so instead of the so-called chancellor majority of 355 votes, a simple majority would have been enough for the office. In order to run for a fourth time for the vice position in the Bundestag presidency, Hilse would have to agree this with the Council of Elders of the Bundestag.

Five candidates without success: AfD fails in election to Bundestag Vice President

With Karsten Hilse , the AfD has already sent its fifth candidate into the race for the vice position. Hilse had previously competed in January and March. Neither he, nor his predecessors Paul Podolay, Albrecht Glaser, Gerold Otten and Mariana Harder-Kühnel achieved the required majority in the election. According to the rules of procedure of the Bundestag, the AfD , like every parliamentary group represented, is entitled to a seat on the parliamentary presidium. Nevertheless, MEPs can vote freely in the election to fill the posts.
