A moderate magnitude earthquake was felt overnight in Tehran from Thursday to Friday, causing panic in the Iranian capital. A jolt of several seconds was felt by several AFP journalists around 12:45 am Friday (8:15 pm Thursday).

The website of the center for seismological studies of the University of Tehran was not accessible, but according to the Twitter account of earthquake surveillance EMSC, the earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.8 had for epicenter a 55 km east of the Iranian capital.
Soon after the earthquake, many Tehran residents left their homes in accordance with the safety rules to be observed in such cases. Around 01:30 GMT, the state media had not reported casualties or damage.
