Usually popular, this tribute was broadcast on video due to the Covid-19 epidemic. The two legionaries belonged to the 1st foreign regiment of cavalry of Carpiagne (Bouches-du-Rhône), where a national homage will be paid to them Friday, in the presence of the Minister for the Armies Florence Parly. Kévin Clément, 21, was fatally wounded by enemy fire on Monday during an operation to combat jihadist armed groups in Mali. Friday, Brigadier Dmytro Martynyouk himself succumbed to wounds inflicted on April 23 in Mali by the explosion of an improvised explosive device.

Their remains were taken to the Invalides in two mortuary vehicles escorted by bikers. Their death brings to 43 the number of French soldiers killed in the Sahel since the start of the French intervention in 2013, according to a count made from figures published by the general staff. In recent weeks, the French anti-jihadist force Barkhane has multiplied the offensives in the Sahel, in particular in the so-called " three borders " zone between Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, claiming the " neutralization " of several dozen jihadists in total since the beginning of the year.

The death in four days of two Barkhane soldiers " shows at the same time the bitterness of the combat but not a revival of activity of the EIGS (Islamic State in the Grand Sahara), rather even the illustration of an enemy at bay "Said the Force Commander General Pascal Facon on Tuesday. Barkhane's workforce has recently increased from 4,500 to 5,100 soldiers. Paris hopes that this reinforcement will make it possible to reverse the balance of forces on the ground, where the jihadist groups have multiplied the attacks in recent months.
