Washington (dpa) - The US Department of Justice drops the allegations against former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

The ministry filed an application for an end to the trial with a federal court in Washington, DC, on Thursday. The petition states that the government has concluded that further prosecution in the case does not serve the interests of the judiciary. After only 23 days in office, Flynn resigned as security advisor to US President Donald Trump in February 2017.

Flynn later admitted in the course of the investigation into possible Russian influence on the 2016 US presidential election that he had lied to the FBI. He is also said to have lied to Vice President Mike Pence. In January, Flynn requested that his confession be withdrawn.

Last week, as part of the legal battle over Flynn, documents became known that Trump and his conservative allies believed that Flynn had been fooled by the FBI. An FBI investigator's handwritten note said that Flynn had to be told to lie so that he could be prosecuted or fired.

Trump then said that he saw Flynn as "completely relieved" after the new FBI documents became known. Flynn is a victim of the machinations of "dirty, disgusting bulls at the helm" of the FBI. What happened to him shouldn't happen to any American. Trump also said on a question, that he would consider bringing Flynn back into his government.

FBI special investigator Robert Mueller had found no evidence in his investigation, which was completed last spring, that there had been secret agreements between the Trump campaign team and representatives of Russia before the 2016 election. In his report, Mueller did not rule out Trump's interference with the judicial investigation. However, the president saw himself completely relieved by Mueller's report and repeatedly calls the FBI investigation into the Russian affair "witch hunt".
