New symptoms of new coronary pneumonia are constantly being discovered. In addition to the well-known symptoms similar to flu, such as fever and cough, some symptoms are less common, or you may not be able to be alert in the first place. Have you ever squinted? Or have red eyes? According to the latest research from the University of Hong Kong, the New Coronary Pneumonia virus is susceptible to human conjunctiva, and the eye is an important route of infection.

The latest study by the research team of the School of Public Health of the University of Hong Kong used human respiratory tract and conjunctival tissues cultivated in the laboratory to compare the infection levels of the new coronavirus and several other viruses. Dr. Zhiwei Chen, an associate professor at the School of Public Health, pointed out that the results show that the eyes may be an important way for humans to contract new types of pneumonia.

People in public places should avoid touching their eyes with their hands to avoid spreading the virus through hand contact. Relevant research articles were published in the well-known medical journal "Needle Respiratory Medicine".

Foreign media reported that 1% to 3% of patients diagnosed with new coronary pneumonia developed conjunctivitis.

Vicente Diaz, an ophthalmologist at Yale Medicine, said that many viral diseases can affect the eyes and usually cause follicular conjunctivitis. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) reminded that the new coronavirus can cause mild follicular conjunctivitis and may be infected through contact with the aerosol and conjunctiva.

Another study published in the "New England Journal of Medicine" found that 9 out of 1099 patients left in 30 different hospitals in mainland China developed "conjunctival congestion". In an earlier report by CNN, a registered nurse in a Washington nursing home revealed that "red eyes" are very common among elderly patients who are later diagnosed.

In addition, a study published in "Journal of Medical Virology" found that 1 out of 30 patients with new coronary pneumonia had conjunctivitis and found a new coronavirus in eye secretions. So must the red eyes be infected with new coronary pneumonia? (According to the picture):

Viral conjunctivitis

Cause: Usually related to upper respiratory tract infection, the main pathogens are adenovirus and enterovirus, the latest is a new coronavirus

Symptoms: Eyes are red, swollen, tears, and white in the eyes. They appear red and light pink, but depending on the degree of inflammation, the color of the eyes is determined. The secretions from the infected eyes are thinner than those from bacterial conjunctivitis

Bacterial conjunctivitis

Cause: caused by a variety of bacteria, most commonly Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae, Chlamydia infection

Symptoms: Red eyes and infected eyes will emit thick white or yellow discharge, and continuous blinking will continue to produce discharge

Allergic conjunctivitis

Cause: Caused by allergens, such as air pollution, wearing contact lenses

Symptoms: When turning up the eyelids (conjunctiva), there will be a bump, a secretion, dry eyes, a foreign body sensation

A report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) on February 28 lists the 14 most common symptoms among patients diagnosed with New Coronary Pneumonia, including "conjunctival congestion" (pictured):

Some people have a higher risk of conjunctivitis? (According to the picture):

-People who wear contact lenses

-Children under 5 years old

-People with allergies

-People with chronic diseases (poor resistance)

With symptoms of respiratory tract infection and fever: Seek medical attention immediately

Experts say that if you have symptoms of conjunctivitis, accompanied by respiratory symptoms and fever, you should seek medical attention immediately, call the clinic first, and express your suspicion that you may be infected with new coronary pneumonia and request a test. And everyone can take the following measures every day to reduce the risk of infection (according to the picture):

The CHP recommends:

-Always keep your hands clean, especially before touching your mouth, nose or eyes; after touching public facilities such as handrails or door handles; or when your hands are contaminated with respiratory secretions, such as after coughing or sneezing

-When washing hands, clean hands with liquid soap and water, rub hands for at least 20 seconds, rinse with water and dry with paper towels or hand dryer. If there are no hand-washing facilities or there is no obvious dirt on the hands, it is also effective to use 70-80% alcohol hand rub to clean the hands

-Avoid touching your eyes with your hands. If unavoidable, wash your hands thoroughly before and after touching your eyes

-Do not share personal items with others, such as towels, pillows, eye drops, eye medications, eye cosmetics, contact lenses, and other items that may come into contact with the eyes

-The infected person should not go to work, school or swimming before healed to prevent infecting others
