Coronavirus: nearly 272,000 dead worldwide

The pandemic of the new coronavirus has killed at least 271,780 people worldwide since its appearance in December in China, according to a report established by AFP from official sources Friday at 9 p.m. (French time).

More than 3,896,790 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 195 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic. This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, with a large number of countries only testing cases requiring hospital treatment. Among these cases, at least 1,268,000 are now considered cured.

Since the count made the previous day at the same time, 4,862 new deaths and 90,352 new cases have been recorded worldwide. The countries with the most new deaths are the United States with 1,257 new deaths, the United Kingdom (626) and Brazil (610).

The United States, which recorded its first death linked to the coronavirus in early February, is the country most affected in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 76,101 deaths for 1,271,775 cases. At least 195,036 people were declared cured.

After the United States, the most affected countries are the United Kingdom with 31,241 deaths for 211,364 cases, Italy with 30,201 deaths (217,185 cases), Spain with 26,299 deaths (222,857 cases), and France with 26,230 dead (174,791 cases on Thursday, the authorities did not provide a full assessment on Friday).

Among the countries hardest hit, Belgium is the one that deplores the highest number of deaths compared to its population, with 74 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Spain (56), Italy (50), the United Kingdom (46), and France (40).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao), where the epidemic started at the end of December, officially counted a total of 82,886 cases (1 new between Thursday and Friday), including 4,633 deaths (0 new), and 77,993 cures.

Europe totaled Friday at 9 p.m. 153,690 deaths for 1,681,558 cases, the United States and Canada 80,754 deaths (1,338,087 cases), Latin America and the Caribbean 17,520 deaths (324,309 cases), Asia 10,163 deaths (277,011 cases), the Middle East 7,423 deaths (212,644 cases), Africa 2,105 deaths (54,944 cases), and Oceania 125 deaths (8,245 cases).

This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO). Due to corrections by the authorities or late publication of the data, the 24h increase figures may not correspond exactly to those published the previous day.
