Coronavirus: re-authorized swimming and access to the beach in Saint-Martin

The Collectivity of Saint-Martin authorized on Friday the resumption of swimming and access to the beach in the small dependent island of Guadeloupe, three days before the deconfinement. The French part of Saint-Martin (about 32,000 inhabitants) currently has 38 reported cases of Covid-19, one patient in hospital and 3 deaths.

The president of the Community Daniel Gibbs took a territorial decree lifting the ban on swimming and access to beaches taken at the start of the health crisis. The population can since Friday return to the beaches "for the practice of individual sport (walking, running) and take a swim in the sea," said the authority. This territorial decree comes at a time when the prefecture had indicated that the bathing ban would only be lifted if the results of the ARS analyzes were positive.

It is a “gesture” from the president of the Community, “aware of local habits and the need of everyone to enjoy the sea” . This decree however stipulates that barbecues, gatherings and relaxation on the beach are prohibited.

Another territorial decision, the postponement of the start of the school year to May 18, and only for CP, CE1 and CM2. "The President of the Collectivity (...) took into account the disturbing statistics provided by the National Education on the educational emergencies of the pupils of CP / CE1 and CM2, pivotal classes in terms of learning to read and calculation, and preparation for the start of the new school year for CM2 children ” , indicates the Community.

The school transportation service will not resume, but hot meals will be served to the students. Daniel Gibbs decided to grant free school meals to all until the end of the school year, "aware of the immense socio-economic difficulties experienced by families" .
