Coronavirus in the US: lost 20.5 million jobs in April, the worst figure since 1930

The unemployment rate rose more than 10 points between March and April and reached 14.7%, according to data published by the Labor Department.

The unemployment rate in the United States rose from 4.4% in March to 14.7% in April after the loss of 20.5 million jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic last month, the worst figure since the Great Depression of 1930. 

"Employment fell in practically all the main industrial sectors, with a more pronounced drop in the leisure and hospitality sectors," said the Labor Department.
