Washington is blocking a Security Council draft resolution on the Corona epidemic

The United States has obstructed a Security Council draft resolution calling for an end to what they called "hostilities" in light of the outbreak of the Coronavirus.

And the French Press Agency quoted diplomats as saying that the United States told the rest of the Security Council that it "cannot support the current draft," which surprised them.

The project, proposed by Tunisia and France and being negotiated since last March, calls for "enhanced coordination" between UN members and also notes "the urgent need to support all countries and relevant entities within the United Nations system, including the specialized health agencies."

According to some diplomats, the new American obstruction came because of the language used to speak about the World Health Organization, while other sources said that Washington had expressed its desire to return to the first version of the project, which includes a call for "transparency" in cooperation.

Tunisia and France considered that this formula, which does not refer directly to the World Health Organization and mentions it only indirectly, represents a compromise to obtain the final approval of the project by the United States and China.

It is noteworthy that US President Donald Trump announced on the 14th of last month the suspension of US funding for the World Health Organization, citing what he called the "mismanagement" of the United Nations organization for the crisis of the outbreak of the Corona virus.

But Elliot Engel, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the US House of Representatives, confirmed on 27th of last month that “cutting funding for the first International Health Organization, which stands at the forefront of the world's response to Covid 19, will backfire and endanger lives,” adding that “attacking the World Health Organization Instead of responding to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, it will seriously aggravate the situation by undermining one of our main tools to combat the spread of the epidemic. ”
