Anti-Semitic incident in the heart of the Netherlands: The showcase of the popular "Carmel" Jewish restaurant in Amsterdam was shattered yesterday by noon. The attacker, a Syrian refugee named Saleh Ali, pulled the Israeli flag from the restaurant in an attempt to set him on fire. Ali, who had committed the same offense in the past, was arrested again. There were no casualties in the incident.

According to local media reports, Saleh Ali, a Syrian refugee of Palestinian origin, is the same man who broke into the scene as early as 2017. Then he wrapped himself in a Palestinian flag and after shouting "Allah Akbar" in Arabic, hoisted Lum, smashed the restaurant's windows and ran out with the Israeli flag to destroy it - but stopped before doing so. In the end, he was then charged with "vandalism" and the incident was not defined as "anti-Semitic". In practice, Ali was in custody until his trial for two months, and no further punishment was added. It should be noted that when referring to the incident in 2018, he did not express remorse for his actions.

The Carmel restaurant, which is known among kosher keepers coming to the Dutch capital, has in recent years suffered from a series of harassment (at least six documented) by Muslim officials. For example, in March 2018, another attack occurred against the restaurant, with an anonymous smashing one of its windows. In January of this year, a dummy charge was placed at the entrance to the restaurant.

Israeli Ambassador to the Netherlands, Naor Gilon told Israel Today: "The Jewish community in the Netherlands has felt that there has been an increase in anti-Semitism in recent years. It is certainly a worrying phenomenon. The embassy regularly works with the Jewish community against the phenomenon. The Dutch government and the King are also working against anti-Semitism and for the Holocaust. , Including a growing discourse about the Dutch establishment's cooperation with the Nazis. "

According to data from the Israel Information and Documentation Center, CIDI, the number of antisemitic incidents in the Netherlands peaked at an all-time high in 2019, with 182 antisemitic incidents in the Netherlands, an unprecedented number in the last 30 years in which the information center documents the issue. This is a 35% increase from 2018. For example, in 2018, there were 18 anti-Semitic incidents known as "abusive abuse," compared to 44 in 2019. However, some cases are not classified as anti-Semitic events, such as Ali's previous attack on the Carmel Restaurant, which was previously classified as "vandalism."
