Gmund - It is a piece of freedom that should be celebrated with a piece of cake: thanks to the corona loosening of the Bavarian government, close family members can visit again. Ursula Vojacek (34), owner of Café Wagner in Gmund, is therefore expecting a good rush tomorrow on Mother's Day. In a conversation, the master confectioner reveals what is one of the bestsellers and whether today's mom eats more calories.

Ms. Vojacek, thanks to the easing announced by Prime Minister Markus Söder, close relatives can visit Mother's Day. Is your bakery hot now?

Ursula Vojacek: I have already received a few orders, but it is not that my phone is no longer idle. We expect a good rush on Mother's Day. We'll start an hour earlier that day and bake more. We naturally produce fresh every day. And people know that I have a large selection of presents.

Ring cake, cream cake or something with a shot? Which cake goes particularly well on Mother's Day?

Ursula Vojacek:  For example, we make nice petits fours or strawberry cake in heart shape. Marble or lemon cakes and biscuits are also popular. They last longer. This is useful when the family is a little smaller.

And what about sweet expressions of love for mom?

Ursula Vojacek: We sell a lot of marzipan labels  with texts such as "For Mommy", "For Mother's Day" or "Dear Mom".

As a rule, the mothers bake. Do you deserve to be spoiled with something delicious?

Ursula Vojacek:  I think it is nice to have a really artisanal, individual cake. It is more personal. And I would be more happy about it than a box of chocolates from the supermarket.

Does today's woman eat more calories?

Ursula Vojacek:  No, at least we don't notice that when selling. If you buy a good cake, you have to accept that there is a bit of sugar in it. It's like a good wine: it has to taste good and there has to be something in it.

And what do you bake for your own mom?

Ursula Vojacek:  My mother lives in Brannenburg and, because she belongs to the risk group corona, has put herself in quarantine as a precaution. Therefore I will not visit her on Mother's Day. But I'm sending her chocolates. She prefers varieties with Bavarian cream, truffle or caramel. My stepmother, who lives with my dad at Lake Tegernsee, also gets a pack - with Florentines.

Speaking of Corona: Do many people comfort themselves with more sweets during the crisis?

Ursula Vojacek: Overall,  business has been going well lately. It is striking that the customer packages are divided. So instead of three pieces of cake in a box, for example, there should be three boxes. You can tell that people are bringing it to their relatives because they have not been allowed to eat it together or because it is still difficult. Overall, in addition to the regular customers, there are now more new customers who take a piece of cake with them and say: "This is something for the soul."
