Palestinians understand: Applying sovereignty - an inevitable move

Daniel Siriotti

Let's start with the bottom line, the Palestinians have come to terms with the fact that the process of annexation and the large settlement blocks in Judea and Samaria will be implemented fully or gradually within months and with the full backing and support of the Trump administration.

The words of US Ambassador Friedman in an interview given to Ariel Kahana in "Israel Today" only illustrate how passionate the Washington administration is at implementing the annexation program despite the threats and outrage of the Palestinian leadership and supporters in the international community and in Israel.

To understand the Palestinians' attitude toward the annexation plan, pay attention to the rhetoric in which he chose to express Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, who made a statement to the Fatah leadership a few days ago that "if Israel annexes the port or parts of it, we will consider reneging on all agreements signed with Israel and the Washington administration. " It is not for no reason that Abu Mazen chose to express himself in a form that is neither binding nor relatively compelling, and even for now has abandoned his warnings to cease security coordination between the Palestinian security forces and the Israeli security system.

Ironically, the global corona crisis illustrated to Abu Mazen and senior Palestinian leadership the extent to which the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in general, and the Palestinian issue in particular, have been pushed to the bottom of the international community and Arab rulers' fears of the stability of their regime due to the global economic crisis caused by the global crisis.

Abbas and Hamas leaders in Gaza see Lebanon's bubbling protest and rage against Hezbollah and realize that the widespread campaign of social networking against Israel, which has warmly embraced Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Ashiya, will not obscure the fact that Israel is actually helping Palestinians in Judea and Samaria to succeed The corona and the economic crisis that followed it, and not necessarily the rulers of their Arab states have trouble at home.

Among the Palestinian leadership, there have also been quite a few criticisms lately, though still in the dark and with great caution, against Abu Mazen and the leadership generation who came from Tunis to the Occupied Territories along with Arafat after the Oslo Accords, which have failed completely over the years and made all tactical and strategic mistakes - such as the Trump administration's confession - only It has damaged national interests and the vision of the independent Palestinian state.

The Palestinian public and its leadership understand that the process of applying sovereignty has begun with the establishment of the unity government in Israel, and as long as President Trump in the White House - applying sovereignty is an inevitable move.

The hope that remains for Abu Mazen and senior leaders in Ramallah is a loss of Trump in the November presidential election and the rise of Joe Biden and the Democratic Party in the hope that the US position will be less biased alongside Israel.

However, quite a few Palestinian officials stress that even if Biden defeats Trump in the presidential election, he will not open Abu Mazen's doors in Washington, claiming that Biden is an enthusiastic supporter of Israel and the Zionist enterprise no less than President Trump and the current administration.
