Applying Sovereignty: We are future generations

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's upcoming visit and Ambassador Friedman's statements on sovereignty are marking the return of the political issue to the public and media agenda. Ironically, this happens on the week when the Palestinians, as every May 15, mark "Nakba Day." The end of the Mandate and the departure of the British from Israel on May 15, 1948 led to the establishment of the State of Israel, but also to the outbreak of the War of Independence, which brought defeat and disaster on the Palestinians. Indeed, the Palestinians' decision to reject the UN partition proposal in November and launch an armed struggle against the Jewish community turned out to be a fatal mistake, the first of many Palestinians, but they choose to vote every year and exploit it to stir the spirits against Israel.

This year, as mentioned, the "Nakba Day" marking the "Centennial Plan" and Israel's intentions is to advance the process of applying Israeli law to parts of Judea and Samaria. It is not surprising that in the Palestinian camp there is talk of a renewed Nakba, which may bury the idea of the Palestinian state completely with it.

However, like the 1948 Nakba, the current catastrophe was largely brought on by the Palestinians, through a series of decisions they have made over the years, most notably the use of violence and terrorism, and the reliance on others, whether the UN or the EU, rather than taking responsibility. After all, the question of what happened in 1948 would have been better for the Palestinians to leave to historians, and in any case, their attempt to force Israel into the Palestinian narrative of the conflict is intended to fail in the first place and only prevents both sides from moving forward on reconciliation.

What is particularly interesting this year is the almost total disregard, and even indifference, to the yawning and carelessness that provokes "Nakba Day" in the Arab world, but also for many Palestinians in Judea and Samaria and Gaza, and among the Arab citizens of Israel. All of them probably decided to move on and not stay stuck in the past, as well as enslave their future by those who have proven countless times in the past, all they can do is bring disaster after disaster on the Palestinians.

The fact that Israel does not currently have a Palestinian partner brings the ball back to the field and even requires it to make tough decisions on its own. It is precisely against this background, and not following the Palestinians, that it is appropriate to return to the Israeli story of the War of Independence, and in particular to two statements by David Ben-Gurion, the state and the architect of the victory in the war: One statement about the "crying for generations" was said regarding the government's refusal to accept the proposal to instruct the IDF to launch a military operation that might allow him to take over all of Judea and Samaria. the second is that the war was a major achievement, but not everything we dreamed obtain indeed we have achieved, and this task should be left to future generations.

it is worth these statements Ben-Gurion To stand before the eyes of Israeli leaders at this fateful hour we are in, when making decisions that must not be A "weeping for generations", or a task title to future generations, not at all clear that they can fill it.
