Salvadorans repatriated from Panama arrive in their country

(CNN Spanish) - A total of 23 Salvadorans and 84 Hondurans arrived in their respective countries repatriated from Panama, where they remained the last weeks without being able to return to their homes after the measures adopted by the governments to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

In the case of El Salvador, the San Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport has been closed since March 18.

According to the implemented protocol, passengers had their temperature taken before boarding the plane and everyone had to wear a mask. The aircraft stopped in San Pedro Sula and then traveled to El Salvador.

"Welcome home," Alexandra Hill, El Salvador's foreign minister, told them as Salvadorans descended from the Copa Airlines boeing 737. "This process is still difficult for everyone, it has been tremendously hard for you to be away from home," added Hill.

According to health regulations, nationals returning from abroad must comply with a mandatory quarantine of at least 30 days in containment centers, to rule out their being asymptomatic carriers of the virus.

"I'm happy to be back," said Byron Aguilar, one of the repatriated Salvadorans, minutes before boarding the bus that would take him to a containment center. "I have a 12-year-old daughter, a 13-month-old baby and I am the support of my home," added Aguilar.

The authorities explained on Sunday afternoon that they will repatriate the most vulnerable population in the next 14 weeks. Children, pregnant women, older adults and people with health problems will be the priority.

This is the first group of Salvadorans to return by air. Other Salvadorans who were stranded in Guatemala, Belize and Honduras returned overland a few days ago.
