"The wind just has to turn" - an expert expects extreme weather changes in the near future

2020-05-13T09:54:12.582Z

Weather in Germany: After the sun was shining at the weekend, the weather changed drastically. But an end is in sight.

Weather in Germany: After the sun was shining at the weekend, the weather changed drastically. But an end is in sight.

  • The Germany weather * was exceptional in April.
  • Now the ice saints have struck.
  • It was snowing and getting frosty - but soon the turning point will come.

Update from May 13th, 11.11am: In Germany we have many too warm months in a row. We were able to follow this trend last year and it will continue in 2020 . However, May could again be the exception to the rule. So it was also last year when the bliss month interrupted the series on comparatively warm months. There are signs of a repeat, as  wetter.com meteorologist Paul Heger says in his 16-day forecast .

Because of a northern current it is currently very fresh and accordingly the first days in May were "too cool".  "Usually even one to two degrees too cool," said the expert. Towards the weekend, however, the temperatures rise again, as Germany is more strongly influenced by a high over Great Britain. The two lows across Scandinavia and Spain are losing influence.

Germany weather: bull heat after the frost shock?

The expert also has sunny prospects for the Ascension Day - even for the north. The temperatures are rising in general: in Hamburg around 20 degrees could be reached, in Munich even peak values around 30 degrees. That could mean the summer breakthrough, according to the meteorologist. Mind you, this will only be available in late May.

Looking back at the year 2019: Back then, after the “too cool” May, a bull heat broke out in Germany. In 2020 these will already be available in southern and south-eastern Europe. Here the thermometer currently reaches up to 40 degrees. "The wind would only have to turn and that would be with us," says Heger, giving a sunny view.

However, it will remain comparatively cool over the next few days. There may be frost in the ground at night. However, the values are slowly increasing. Nevertheless, it remains extremely dry even in May. This continues to burden the forests and plants.

Weather in May: Ice Saints have Germany under control - but the big turning point is on the way

News from May 12th:

Update 5.15 p.m .: Floor frost and cool temperatures: The happy month of May is not at all comfortably warm and spring-like, due to the ice saints. There were even frost temperatures in Nuremberg, and it was even snowing in parts of Bavaria and the Black Forest . How long does this weather phase last? According to wetter.com, the holiday of Ascension Day on May 21 (better known as "Father's Day") could bring a breakthrough and become a turning point. By then it should be warmer and sunnier again - and then the summer could break through with the appropriate temperatures up to 30 degrees.

But that is still a dream of the future! Cool sea air of Arctic origin currently determines our weather (see update from 11.50 a.m.).

Sleet storms, frost and freezing temperatures - arctic air meets Germany

Update from May 12, 11:50 a.m .: Even on Tuesday, the weather in Germany remains relatively volatile . There are gusty winds from the west to the northwest in the north, and occasional thunderstorms in the coastal area. On Wednesday night there is again a risk of frost.

The very cool sea air of Arctic origin , which is also above Germany, has now come to rest under the influence of a high-pressure zone , reports the German Weather Service (DWD) on its website. But the north of the country is still on the edge of low pressure areas over Scandinavia

Over the course of a day there can be occasional short sleet storms in the north . On the night of Wednesday there is wind from the west, which however flattens out quickly. However, there may be stronger gusts of wind on the Baltic Sea. On Wednesday night, especially over the middle of the country, there is slight air frost at up to -2 degrees . Otherwise there is slight frost near the ground throughout Germany, only the south and northeast of the country are largely spared.

Weather in Germany: Stormy gusts of up to 100 km / h come at the start of the week

Update from May 11, 9:14 a.m .: In large parts of Germany, it is getting uncomfortable at the start of the week: The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of stormy gusts in Bavaria. Franconia, the low mountain ranges and the Alps as well as south of the Danube and the Bavarian Forest are particularly affected. The winds locally reach speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour , occasionally hail and heavy rain can also be expected.

And the prospects forecast by the DWD do not sound good at all: thunderstorms, heavy rain, slippery weather and even snow are all the rage. The DWD warns on Monday of strong thunderstorms in southeastern Germany , and there can also be heavy rain in the southwest with up to 20 liters per square meter within an hour. This violent precipitation spreads east and northeast in the morning.

Weather in Germany: Snowfall line sometimes drops to 600 to 800 meters

The snow line then drops in the evening - and sometimes already in the afternoon - initially in the Rhön, in the Thuringian Forest as well as in the Ore and Fichtel Mountains and the Black Forest to around 600 to 800 meters . According to the DWD, there is 1 to 5 cm of wet snow until late evening or until the first half of the night on Tuesday and therefore smooth. In the night to Tuesday, the snow line in the Alps then drops to 600 to 800 meters. Until Tuesday morning there is also 1 to 5 cm of snow.

But elsewhere, the "Ice Saints" beginning today live up to their name. According to ARD daily topics, the temperature in Darmstadt plunges from 26 degrees yesterday to 6 today . "This is not a typo," says ARD meteorologist Sven Plöger. A drop in temperature that washed itself - and which is obviously no exception in Germany this Monday. Incidentally, deep Britta is to blame .

The local differences are serious. Monday begins in the south of Bavaria with a sunny start, but at noon there are sometimes strong thunderstorms. The temperatures on the Danube reach a maximum of 22 degrees, in the Vogtland eight degrees. In the night of Tuesday the temperatures drop significantly : It can snow in the south of Bavaria, in Franconia the meteorologists warn of slippery roads.

Nasty weather for Mother's Day - frost, just in time for the ice saints

Update from May 10th, 11:06 am:  Mother's day trippers who are still looking forward to the warm temperatures, especially from the north, can still be badly surprised during the day. Because throughout the day, sometimes powerful source clouds rise - and then discharge in the warm, humid air : The result is violent storms with showers and sometimes violent thunderstorms, as the German Weather Service warns.

It can affect almost all of Germany: Thunderstorms can strike from Rhineland-Palatinate to the Ore Mountains and in the south to the Alpine foothills.

Wetter.de also expects the storms in the afternoon - and warns that the thunderstorms may also be accompanied by hail. According to Focus Scherwinde, the severity of the thunderstorms should intensify particularly south of the Danube - there is then a risk of being outdoors.

Weather in Germany: is the snow coming?

Update from May 9th, 3:02 pm: Is the snow really coming to Germany ? The DWD had already predicted this on Friday : “Snowfalls in southern Germany are likely to be possible down to lower levels. Frost and soil frost will also be an issue again temporarily, ”says the DWD forecast from Friday.”

The cold front coincided with the first day of the so-called ice saints. "This is more of a coincidence," says meteorologist Jens Hoffmann . Jörg Kachelmann (see below) had expressed himself much more drastically on the subject of “ice saints”.

Before the big change in the weather, there will be a mixed Sunday, as the dpa reported , citing the DWD on Saturday. Accordingly, Sunday in the east and northeast is initially sunny, in the rest of the republic it is cloudy. Showers come down on a strip between southwest and northeast, and strong thunderstorms can also be expected. There is a local risk of heavy rain. Maximum values in the northwest are between 15 and 22 degrees, in the rest of the republic between 22 and 26 degrees.

The big turning point then follows on Monday night . Then, according to the forecast, showers and thunderstorms sometimes continue. After all, in the southeast and northwest it mostly stays dry. On the other hand, showers fall on the North Sea, sometimes with sleet . The values drop to a maximum of 13 to 8 degrees in the southern half, and DWD experts expect 8 to 2 degrees for the north. Thunderstorms and stormy gusts threaten in the mountains and on the coasts.

Monday will be even more uncomfortable. After all, rain-like rain falls from Rhineland-Palatinate to Brandenburg, and rain falls into the Danube region in the course of the morning. Heavy showers and thunderstorms fall. There is a risk of heavy rain . Go in the afternoon in the southeast half of shower-like and partly longer lasting, rains and storms down. The snow line drops to 700 meters. For the northwest, the weather service expects sun. It gets much cooler there with maximum values between 8 and 14 degrees. The temperature rises to 22 degrees east of the Inn.

Unfortunately, that's not all. Because after Monday it gets even thicker for everyone who hoped for relaxing hours outside. On the night of Tuesday , the snow line in the south drops to 500 meters. There is a risk of precipitation turning into snow . Rain falls on the coast. Temperatures cool to 6 to minus 2 degrees. According to the DWD, frost is spreading in the north and in the middle of Germany.

"Even Munich can go white!" Wrote the daswetter.com portal in relation to the first two days of the week.

Weather in Germany: Brief severe weather warning in parts of Bavaria

Update from May 9, 2:52 p.m .: A very brief official warning of thunderstorms applies in parts of Bavaria. Large parts of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district and parts of the neighboring counties are affected. However, the warning only affects the period from 2:40 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. An area north of Regensburg is also affected, according to the DWD. It is a "yellow" weather warning of level 1.

Update from May 9th, 10:42 am: The Ice Saints begin on Monday. Apparently there is regular frost in May. Rarely to the ice saints. An unnecessary relic, weather expert Jörg Kachelmann complains on Twitter: “Conclusion from all graphics and data from the past 100 years: There is rarely frost in May. And in no period as rarely as with the 'ice saints' (similar at the end of May). That was always so. The 'ice saints' are purely a fantasy. ”In other posts, he writes of“ traditional nonsense from the Middle Ages ”.

Conclusion from all graphics and data of the last 100 years: There is rarely frost in May. And in no period as rarely as with the "ice saints" (similar at the end of May). That was always so. The "ice saints" are purely imaginary.

At least this May, frost is expected on time for the ice saints, maybe even snow. This drop in temperature after the warm days begins on Saturday. It was already raining in the morning. Especially in the southern half of the day there can be thunderstorms with heavy rain . This is reported by the German Weather Service (DWD). Up to 25 liters of rainwater per square meter can occur within a short time. Smaller hail and stormy gusts must also be expected.

On Sunday, thunderstorms with heavy rain are also expected in the south , which spread southwest and west to the eastern low mountain range and into Lusatia.

Weather: "Coldest possible air mass" is coming to Germany - temperature drop is imminent

Update from May 8, 3:44 pm: The warm weather is driving sun-seekers into the fresh air these days. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, things are getting tight in German parks. But the mild temperatures are deceiving: Thunderstorms could already occur on Saturday, and storms with hail are possible on Sunday. On Monday, at the beginning of the Ice Saints, snow can even be expected.

Ice-cold Arctic air is currently drifting towards Germany. That reports wetter.com . The cold front sweeps across the North Sea. That is the " coldest possible air mass that we can get in this season at all," reports wetter.com . In line with the ice saints, a drop in temperature is announced for the coming week. The transition to this will probably start at the weekend.

Thunderstorms can already occur on Saturday. Severe storms have also been announced for Sunday . The foothills of the Alps are particularly affected, but also eastern Germany. But it shouldn't stop there. The thunderstorm air is displaced by the cold air in the south-east of Germany on early Monday morning. On Monday, the snowfall line will then sink from the Ore Mountains to the Black Forest to low altitudes.

Weather: The first heat days are coming - then experts warn of "big smack"

Update from May 8th, 10:49 am:  The weather in May remains changeable. After a somewhat warmer weekend from May 8th to 10th, temperatures throughout Germany will drop to 10 degrees Celsius at the beginning of next week. Although the temperatures rise again during the week, it doesn't really get summery. In the second half of May , the weather is expected to remain changeable throughout Germany. Frosty nights should be a thing of the past.

Update from May 7th, 10:36 am: The approaching weekend promises partly summer temperatures . According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the temperatures on Saturday are between 20 and 25 degrees. On Friday, up to 27 degrees are possible.

A first taste of summer ? Not quite, because the weather is already changing on Sunday . In the south, up to 25 degrees are again possible on Mother's Day , while the temperatures in the north can drop. But Sunday also brings a “big clap”, as wetter.de reports. Accordingly, it will be windy and significantly colder - a foretaste of Monday when the temperatures during the day are between 8 and 14 degrees. As the DWD reports, there could be "prolonged rainfall" in the south, the snow line drops to 800 to 400 meters.

Weather: Temperatures should drop radically - the air mass limit even brings snow

Update from May 6th:  On Wednesday it is mostly friendly throughout Germany. But if you already want to clear away the winter sweaters at these summer temperatures, you should be patient. It may even snow again in the happy month of May.

With a few exceptions in north-east Germany with warning level 1, the German Weather Service (DWD) shows green for Germany on Wednesday . Accordingly, clouds form in the north-eastern half towards the afternoon, but for the rest of Germany it remains "slightly cloudy, still dry". The maximum values are between 13 and 20 degrees.

Wetteronline.de reports that it will get warmer by the day by the weekend . But already at the weekend, the temperatures should drop radically again. Just in time for the ice saints  from May 11th to 15th, a low over Scandinavia and a high over the Atlantic are driving ice-cold polar air to Germany on Sunday

In the coming week, where the cold air from the north and the warm air from the south meet, there can be a so-called air mass limit. Below that, the snow line could even sink into the valleys. Whether and where exactly this air mass limit forms is still speculation, according to Wetteronline.de

Weather experts announce "coldest night" - but then the tide turns

Update from May 5, at 9:18 a.m .: Just before Germany can soak up the sun again, the weather today feels a bit sad. In the south , the sun keeps out loudDWD hides behind thick clouds all day and there are sometimes heavy showers in the Alps . In the east, too, there are partly thick cloud cover and showers.

Only in the west can the sun be enjoyed a little longer today. There are cool temperatures between 11 and 15 degrees. In the night it gets really cold again and we can expect up to -6 degrees. According to wetter.de , it will be the coldest night of the week. Tomorrow the tide is slowly turning towards summer and there is a lot of sunshine with only loose spring clouds. The maximum values can then reach up to 20 degrees.

Germany weather: Ice Saints don't let summer get to work yet

After continuing to the weekend out briefly summer, followed by explosive storms on Sunday again a descent of temperatures . The ice saints are not yet really in control of summer. From next Monday, precipitation and ground frost are announced again.

Germany weather: first frost in the ground, then summer - change follows "explosive weather conditions"

First report from May 4, 2020 : Munich - The impression that the weather is going a little crazy is becoming more and more solid. The long-term forecast had already predicted this - so far it should have been right. And May could also be extreme - extremely changeable.

At the start of the week, the weather in Germany is very volatile. Everything is possible, from strong clouds to showers to sun. Then, however, there is a new trend.

New weather trend in Germany: summer is coming back

Then  summer is definitely on the rise  in Germany . However, there can also be violent thunderstorms * , as moist summer air comes to Germany. On Monday, the German Weather Service is already warning of strong thunderstorms for the south-east and north-east of Baden-Württemberg. Heat and drought are expected in summer, especially in the north.

In the coming days, however, Germany can once again look forward to summer weather . There is already a lot of sun in the middle of the week. We benefit from the effects of two high-pressure areas. In the west and southwest, the thermometer reaches up to 20 degrees on Wednesday.

On Thursday it also remains calm and summery. The sun shines in most parts of Germany and the temperatures rise to 18 to 25 degrees in the southwest. The summer trend continues on Friday - in Bavaria up to 26 degrees will be reached.

The weather in Germany is going to be "pretty explosive" - it really blows on weekends

But after the summer weather there will be a bang at the weekend. At up to 27 degrees, the first thunderstorms are approaching Germany from the west on Saturday. By Sunday at the latest it will be "quite explosive in the weather," explains meteorologist Alban Burster from wetter.com.

A low pressure area over France is in charge and separates warm, humid from cooler air. Heavy thunderstorms can then be expected in the transition area between these two zones. According to current estimates by the weather expert, this zone will be somewhere in the south or southwest. This can lead to "very heavy heavy rain, flooding, hail and storm".

Summer weather in Germany: what does the long-term forecast say?

Especially in times of the corona virus *, which makes vacationing in the south * in the summer months rather unlikely thanks to travel restrictions *, the weather in this country is particularly interesting. There are already forecasts for summer weather in Germany - rather “shock forecasts”, as an expert calls them.
