DECRYPTION - Experts seek to understand why the continent seems rather spared, but fear a worsening is always possible.

Is it a simple reprieve or will Africa be spared by the Covid-19? The continent, whose healthcare system seemed doomed to disaster, has so far escaped disaster. The African Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) identifies, Wednesday, May 13, 2,400 deaths and 70,000 cases of Covid-19 for the entire continent. The epidemic emerged on February 14 in Egypt, three weeks after France. Launched late, it is also progressing at a slower pace. The number of cases doubles every six days - twice as fast as in Europe at the height of the epidemic.

As for the rate of reproduction of the infection, it is low: epidemiologists estimate that ten patients infect between 10 and 15 people on average. "Even if part of the epidemic probably goes under the radar, due to the scarcity of diagnostic tests, a significant excess mortality could not escape us , observes Isabelle Defourny, director of operations at Doctors Without Borders
