With more than 10,000 additional cases every day (+10,899, Wednesday), Russia is now the second largest infected country (with a record of 242,271 cases), behind the United States. Mortality remains low compared to other countries, with 2,212 officially registered victims.
The case fatality rate thus appears to be less than 1%, much lower than in most countries, even the best performing in the face of the pandemic - this rate is 4% for example in Germany. An astonishing level which raises doubts and questions concerning the official balance sheets which the authorities are suspected of minimizing. According to the Financial Times , the figures for victims of the virus could be 70% higher than government data. Opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta said on Tuesday that the death toll in Moscow would be three times higher than that provided by the authorities.
