Beijing (dpa) - According to Chinese media reports, the central Chinese city of Wuhan wants all of its eleven million residents to be coronavirus tested in record time. This is reported by several Chinese media.

The authorities decided to take the measure after six new infections were found in a residential area in Wuhan earlier this week after a long period of no illness in the city. As the business magazine "Caixin" reported, the people in Wuhan should be tested within ten days.

By the end of April, Wuhan, where the virus may have broken out in November, had tested around a million people, the report said. The Chinese website "The Paper" reported that the city's districts should develop a plan for how the mass test can be carried out.

Nowhere in China have so many infections and deaths been reported as in Wuhan, whose hospitals were completely overwhelmed in late January and February. Wuhan was the first city in the world to be completely isolated for weeks because of the virus. Of the more than 80,000 officially reported infections in China, 50,000 were in the metropolis alone. Similarly, of the more than 3,300 deaths listed nationwide, more than 2,500 were complained of by the lung disease Covid-19 in Wuhan. However, it was assumed that by no means all cases were counted in the official statistics.

China says it has much control over the virus, but is struggling with local outbreaks. A double-digit number of new infections has also recently been reported from the northeast Chinese province of Jilin.
