(CNN) - The plans of several major U.S. airlines on how to enforce their mandatory mask requirements for passengers reveal that, for the most part, they will depend on traveler cooperation rather than strict enforcement of the rule.

Separate notes obtained by CNN that American Airlines sent to its pilots and stewardesses show that customers can be denied boarding for not wearing a mask. But once on the plane, "the face coverage policy will become more forgiving" and "the role of the stewardess is informative, not compliance," the pilot's note read. It was first obtained by Reuters.

The American Airlines memo describes how they should handle non-compliant customers: “Please encourage them to comply, but do not escalate further. Similarly, if a client is frustrated by another client's lack of facial coverage, please use situational awareness to reduce the situation. ”

Like American Airlines' policy, United makes exceptions for a variety of reasons including medical conditions. His policy also aims to avoid confrontation.

"If for any reason this policy causes a disturbance on board, we have advised our flight attendants to use their downscaling skills and to have the flexibility to relocate customers on the aircraft as needed," United said in a release.

JetBlue suggests that airport workers tell customers, "To help us keep everyone safe, customers and crew members should now wear face covers." The airline says there will be "challenges" in enforcing its policy.

In a nod to how difficult wearing masks has become, the policy says: “Be sensitive to today's environment; Remember to take advantage of our Hospitality Promises and 'Ask, Negotiate and Convince' skills to reduce the situation with a satisfied or frustrated customer, and use your best judgment to maintain our service standards in order to minimize interruptions. While non-compliant customers will not lead to the need for immediate diversion or removal, our in-flight crew members must notify an airport crew member upon arrival. ”

Its policy also reminds workers that they are not allowed to force people to leave the terminal for not wearing a mask.

CNN has also reached out to Delta and Southwest.

All of the nation's airlines have implemented policies that passengers must wear masks, following the guidance of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC. But neither the Federal Aviation Administration nor the Transportation Security Administration has approved policies that require masks as a matter of government-imposed standards.
