In the corona crisis, patients with mild respiratory diseases can get sick on the phone. It will soon be over.

Berlin (dpa) - Employees can still be on sick leave until the end of May after consulting the doctor over the phone.

From June 1, however, a visit to the practice should be necessary again, as the Federal Joint Committee of Doctors, Clinics and Health Insurance Funds unanimously decided on Thursday.

The end of the special regulation due to the corona crisis was in line with the current assessment of the risk situation, which had led to easing in many areas, made clear the chairman of the committee, Josef Hecken.

Until May 31, it is now valid that certificates of incapacity for work due to minor respiratory diseases can also be obtained by telephone for up to seven calendar days.

This can also be extended by a further seven days by telephone. The Federal Committee had extended the temporary exemption several times in the past months. The background was to reduce the possibility of infection and to relieve practices. The German General Practitioners Association had asked to extend the special regulation at least until the end of June.

Hecken said that with the last extension of about two weeks, the practices were given a time frame to prepare for the restoration of normal operations.

He pointed out that the provision of masks and other protective equipment is now largely guaranteed. There are hygiene concepts in many practices. This would enable patients to receive medical care without exposing themselves to increased infection risks. This is important in order to be able to recognize and treat serious illnesses in good time. In the event of an increase in infection dynamics again, a new special regulation could also be adopted at short notice.
