Steinerberg / Switzerland - Listeria infestation was noticed during routine checks at Käserei Vogel AG in Switzerland , and there are now initial  recalls . A product warning was issued by the Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office on Tuesday, May 5th, 2020. 

The very next day, the first recall campaign started in a Swiss supermarket chain, another followed. Three days after the first warning , on Friday, May 8th, 2020, the European rapid warning system RASFF also published a product warning for the cheese variations from the Swiss cheese dairy.

Product recall: Under no circumstances consume the cheese - urgent warning

The Swiss Federal Office's product warning warns against the consumption of Vogel's cheese products. The buyers of the products suspected of listeria have also been informed and asked to remove the cheese from sales.

According to the European rapid warning system RASFF, the cheese products could also have been exported to Belgium and Germany .

Product recall: Warning - Listeria cheese is especially dangerous for risk groups

Product - warnings and recall -actions due to listeria infection of are inevitable because the bacteria can be life-threatening. According to the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety, the course of the disease can be fatal, especially for people who belong to a risk group.

In healthy adults, so-called listeriosis, which is caused by infection with listeria, can be asymptomatic. However, flu-like symptoms often occur, such as fever or muscle pain.

Recall: These cheese products are only affected by the product warning

The product warning is not the same as a recall . Even if both cheese products  from Käserei Vogel AG currently exist. 

In the product - warning it must be primarily on the company number. Because this shows the origin of a product. Of the listeria infection of are cheese - products concerned, on which the company number CH-5707 can be found.

According to the Swiss Federal Food Safety Agency, these cheese products are affected by the warning :

Product recall: First supermarkets go beyond product warnings

In Switzerland, according to the product - alerts the first recall -actions for cheese started from the affected production. The supermarket chains  Denner and Migros are calling on their customers to bring affected products back to the store. Anyone who complies with the recall will be refunded the price paid for the product .

At Denner , the following product is specifically affected by the recall :

  • DENNER mountain cheese from central Switzerland

The following products are affected by the recall at the Migros supermarket chain :

  • Organic sheep cheese
  • Zuger Waldspitzkäse
  • Cheese platters mild
  • Steinberger quarter fat 
  • Steinberger semi-bold

Both supermarket chains also suggest to their customers who are at risk, that they should see a doctor if they experience symptoms after consuming cheese.

Product recall: Listeria infestation not only possible with cheese

Last year there was a listeria attack on Wilke products. The incident even triggered a warning * via the "KatWarn" app. The meat products infested with the bacteria caused a variety of diseases and even deaths.

At the end of April, a product warning from the discounter Rewe led to a recall *. A popular pizza snack was affected here.
