Heavy trucks, buses and lots of cars: there's always a lot going on on Karolingerstrasse in Gilching. It is one of the main arteries of the municipality. Noise-stricken residents now want traffic to calm down. And make several suggestions.

Gilching - Markus von Bentzel (43) has lived with his family on Karolingerstrasse in Gilching for two years. "We have high hopes for the western bypass as far as traffic congestion is concerned," he says. With the opening of the bypass, however, it got louder on Karolingerstrasse. As announced, the municipality blocked Weßlinger Straße for heavy goods traffic, which has since been looking for other ways through the town. “It has gotten worse outside our door,” says Bentzel's marketing manager.

Janina Weinelt (41), who was born in Gilching, has also been at home on Karolingerstrasse since May 2019 and is suffering from the thunder of trucks. Karolingerstrasse is notorious in Gilching. "Many of the families here do not let their children go to school by bike or on foot, but prefer to drive them themselves." Neighbor Helen Ludwig (38) travels a lot with her little Nikolai by bike trailer, dangerous situations almost count to routine. The speed is 40 on the street. “But very few people stick to it - and there isn't enough flash,” says Ludwig.

Collected 115 signatures

All three would like the problem to come into the focus of the local council. For this, they collected 115 signatures and thought about how the problem could be mitigated. In a petition to the municipal council, they proposed, inter alia, Tempo 30 zones as an immediate measure, a restriction to vehicles with a total weight of up to 3.5 tons and the construction of a combined walkway and cycle path along the southern side of the street. "That would be easier for us cyclists and pedestrians and would not hurt," says Ludwig, who works as a personnel officer. In addition, the signage must be clearer. "Many truck drivers do not yet have the bypass in their navigation system, so signs would help," says Weinelt, trainer for the cybernetic method "kym". Bus traffic is also an issue. "But we don't want to say anything against that, we're happy about it," emphasizes Weinelt. In the submission to the municipal council, the residents nevertheless suggest that the route plan of the bus lines (e.g. X900, X920, X947) be checked to relieve the pressure on Karolingerstrasse. Next Monday there will be a meeting with the administration and mayor Manfred Walter, including signature handover. "We have already spoken to the mayor, but he has given us no hope of relief soon," says von Bentzel. He still doesn't want to let go.

No relief in sight

In fact, the situation is difficult. "I understand the residents," says Walter. But together with Römerstrasse, Starnberger Weg and Landsberger Strasse, Karolingerstrasse is one of the main traffic arteries in the municipality, "It cannot be calmed down," says Walter. The closure of Weßlinger Straße for heavy goods traffic had been planned for a long time. “It was an incredible burden for the residents there. And without the closure, the bypass makes no sense. ”Of course, Römerstrasse will be dismantled in the next few years. "But experts still predict 13,000 vehicles." He doesn't see any relief for Karolingerstrasse. However, the community is in discussion with the companies. They are asked to send their truck drivers and delivery traffic to the bypass. On the Römerstrasse, Walter wants to slow down "and make it uncomfortable for drivers". At the moment speed is 40 on Karolingerstrasse. However, due to the two churches and kindergartens, Karolingerstrasse will always remain an important traffic artery. "But the Committee on the Environment and Transport will deal with the issue."
