Since there can be no classic "Eurovision Song Contest" due to the Corona crisis, ARD and ProSieben have planned several replacement shows.

  • Europe's musicians have been competing in the " Eurovision Song Contest" for decades
  • This year, however, the music competition had to be canceled due to the corona pandemic .
  • ARD and ProSieben broadcast several ESC replacement shows on Saturday, May 16.

Hamburg / Cologne / Hilversum - Much to the regret of artists and music fans from all over Europe, the " Eurovision Song Contest" had to be canceled this year because of the corona pandemic. However, the viewers do not have to do without the annual pop spectacle this year, because the ARD and ProSieben are broadcasting several ESC replacement shows instead of the original competition : From  “Free-ESC” and their own German finale from the Elbphilharmonie to the international format "Europe Shine a Light " and a repeat of the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 from Oslo, where Lena won for Germany, a fairly broad program is now planned for May 16, 2020.

"Eurovision Song Contest 2020 - the German Finale" (ARD): "Sieger der Herz" is chosen here

The first broadcasts the show “Eurovision Song Contest 2020 - the German Finale” * with Barbara Schöneberger from the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg from 8:15 pm . At around 10 p.m., a German “ winner of the heart” will be chosen from the participants who are actually scheduled for Rotterdam. Ten of the 40 foreign ESC contributions are up for vote, including Russia and Switzerland. The performers from Lithuania, Iceland and Denmark even perform live. Michael Schulte and Peter Urban comment.

"Europe Shine a Light": ARD broadcasts international replacement show for the "Eurovision Song Contest"

The ARD then shows the international replacement show "Europe Shine a Light" * by Dutch television, but there is no voting. The show does not come from a large hall in Rotterdam, but from a TV studio in the media city of Hilversum near Amsterdam. In about two hours, all the artists nominated for Rotterdam and their songs will be in the spotlight. And they should sing "Love Shine a Light" from their respective home country, the 1997 ESC title by Katrina and the Waves.

"Europe Shine a Light" (ARD): ESC replacement show for European cohesion in the corona crisis

The TV show should connect Europe in the corona crisis , that's what the broadcasting union EBU and the producing TV stations want. The "unforgettable moment in Eurovision history" that TV producer Sietse Bakker wishes for could be when Grand Prix fans all over the world join in and together with three-time ESC winner Johnny Logan his 40-year-old winning title " What's Another Year ”.

"Europe Shine a Light" (ARD) as an ESC tribute full of surprises

The producers promise a show with lots of musical surprises , appearances by Eurovision stars and hits to sing along to. The Dutchwoman Ilse DeLange, together with Michael Schulte, is supposed to sing the German winning title from 1982, “A Little Peace” by Nicole. Also present is the reigning ESC winner Duncan Laurence, who won the ballade “Arcade” for the Netherlands in Tel Aviv in 2019. The show will be presented by the Dutch TV presenter Chantal Janzen, the singers Edsilia Rombley (two ESC participants, fourth place in 1998) and Jan Smit, who forms the hit band Klubbb3 with Florian Silbereisen and the Belgian singer Christoff De Bolle.

"Free European Song Contest" (ProSieben): Stefan Raab organizes his own ESC replacement show

At ProSieben , old master Stefan Raab * has launched a new song competition, the "Free European Song Contest" * with 15 of his own country representatives, including Sarah Lombardi, Mike Singer and Vanessa Mai. Steven Gätjen and the ESC 2014 winner Conchita Wurst will moderate the show, which will last around four hours from 8:15 p.m.

"Eurovision Song Contest 2010" (ARD): The first shows Lena Meyer-Landrut's great triumph

Another former ESC winner will also be shown on the ARD, because at 00.05 the first broadcasts a repeat of the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 from Oslo, in which Lena * won for Germany. Since then, the career of those who were just under 18 at the time was steeply uphill. Thanks to numerous albums * and singles *, Lena Meyer-Landrut has become an integral part of the charts and is also quite present on German television *.
