The two alleged main perpetrators - a 31-year-old student from Langenhagen and a 29-year-old bank apprentice from Seelze, originally from Goslar - had to answer before the regional court in Braunschweig.

The court ordered the remaining amounts of money to be confiscated. The public prosecutor had given the 31-year-old a prison sentence of three years and nine months, a 29-year sentence for the 29-year-old, and a two-year suspended sentence for the 29-year-old from Goslar. The defense lawyers pleaded suspended sentences without making a specific application.

The court held the 31-year-old to be the "head" of the company. With the money he had stolen, he had bought expensive equipment for a professional recording studio in the basement of his apartment in Langenhagen. Both of the main defendants are rappers and also released a music video in 2019.

One of the videos showed 500-euro notes, said the spokesman for the responsible central office for cyber and computer crime at the Göttingen public prosecutor's office, Mohamed Bou Sleiman.

The fraud was made possible by another suspect from Achim, against whom a separate investigation is pending. He is said to have leaked the personal data of wealthy bank customers to the 31-year-old.

In order to track down the masterminds, the investigators had monitored many telephone connections and online communication.

In order to disguise their perpetration and the way the fraudulently obtained money, the two main defendants always acted in the background and made use of various helpers, said investigator Bou Sleiman. These would then have opened various accounts with fake ID cards that were purchased on the Darknet.

Larger sums were then transferred to these accounts from the spied accounts of the wealthy bank customers via tele-banking. The money was then also forwarded to Bitcoin accounts abroad.
