By bike through Geretsried: weak points and a shield prank

The city wants to become bike-friendly municipalities. Where there is room for improvement, a tour with ADFC members branches.

Geretsried - At the beginning of the year the city council decided to apply for admission to the “Working Group for Bicycle-Friendly Municipalities in Bavaria” (AGFK). A focus bike tour of members of the ADFC district board showed that there is a need for action in many places. Our employee Peter Herrmann was there with his bike.

"There is a very significant risk potential for cross-border cycling," explains Josefine Hopfes. Especially during rush hour there are long waiting times for schoolchildren and commuters to reach the traffic island in the middle. Once the cyclist has arrived there, it can happen that a driver slows down and wants to let him pass. But on the right turn lane behind it towards Wolfratshausen, an initially undetectable, approaching vehicle could cause a collision. Because the traffic volume at this point - after the completion of around 780 apartments on the neighboring Banater Strasse - will increase in the next few years, the ADFC demands a complete revision of the traffic routing. "Additional bicycle lanes, traffic lights, a limit of 30 km / h and one-way rules would be possible solutions," suggests ADFC member Werner Grimmeiß. Hopfes was disappointed that the city had not built a bicycle underpass during the tunneling of the Schwaigwaller Bach on the Blumenstrasse a few years ago. "That was a shield prank," she criticized.

The situation at Karl-Lederer-Platz

The bike path directly at the town hall is interrupted by the entrance to the underground car park, but a bypass is safe. Already in summer 2019, the ADFC commented on the changed development plan at the "traffic junction B11 - Karl-Lederer-Platz". "From our point of view, the safest and most direct solution is an underpass of the scope in a north-south orientation," believes Hopfes. Almost a year later, during our tour, she admits that the current bypass around Karl-Lederer-Platz is no problem for cyclists. In order not to collide with oncoming pedestrians in front of the town hall, Hopfes descends at this narrow point for safety reasons and lets passersby pass by. In order to reach the shops on Karl-Lederer-Platz, it makes sense for cyclists coming from the north to turn onto the connecting path to Graslitzer Straße at the museum. Overall, the ADFC welcomes the traffic calming on Karl-Lederer-Platz.

Construction site on Egerlandstrasse

As reported, the building cooperative started civil engineering work for the BGZ2 project in March. The Sparkasse is also building a multi-storey residential and commercial building on the opposite side of the street. For both projects, it was necessary to block public transport routes between the confluence with the Fasanenweg and Egerlandstrasse 61 and 78, respectively. "The current state is not a permanent solution: the bicycle traffic takes place here on the footpath", Claudia Redeker criticizes. She hopes that the ADFC will be actively involved in the further planning.

Dangerous and confusing: Josefine Hopfes from the ADFC district executive board only comes in two stages during rush hour and with a certain amount of time safely via the flower road (left). Crossing the Isar Cycle Path on Tattenkofener Straße (right) is a major safety risk.

For many years, crossing the Isar cycle path via Tattenkofener Straße to Breslauer Weg has been a risk for cyclists and pedestrians due to the high speed of the passing cars, which usually pass this point at 100 kilometers an hour. Regrettably, the ADFC has not yet implemented a traffic light or a bicycle tunnel. The cyclists are also worried about the plans for the future S7 terminal. Richard-Wagner-Straße is to be lowered and led under the tracks. A roundabout is planned at Jeschkenstraße. "Many cyclists will not accept this solution," Grimmeiß fears.

Conclusion of the ADAFC cyclists

"Bicycle traffic within the city can be greatly improved", Hopfes sums up. Since most of the roads and streets are owned by the city, there is plenty of room for maneuver. The approval of the relevant traffic authorities is required for state and federal roads. However, the new membership in the AGFK and joint visits to the vulnerabilities could put more pressure on them. Funds from the Free State of Bavaria can also be used for the necessary measures. "The money is there, it only has to be requested in time," Grimmeiß wishes. Only the as yet unresolved Corona crisis could put a spanner in the works for cyclists. "This will delay the implementation of many measures," fears Hopfes. The first AGFK tour with specialist representatives necessary for the development of a cycle traffic concept is expected to take place in autumn 2020 or early 2021.
