The deputies were tame on Wednesday when Chancellor Merkel was interviewed in the Bundestag. A Green MP in particular missed her chance.

  • Chancellor Angela Merkel asked a question time in the Bundestag on Wednesday
  • The Green MP Ulle Schauws also asked questions to the head of government.
  • However, your questions symbolized the role of the Greens in the Corona crisis.
  • Here you will find the basic facts about the corona virus * and the corona news from Germany *. You can also find current case numbers in Germany here as a map *. The following recommendations for Corona protective measures * are currently available.

Berlin - Chancellor Merkel in "cross-examination" in the Bundestag : In the middle of the corona crisis , which turned public life in Germany upside down and brought massive economic and social upheavals, the Chancellor in the Bundestag had to answer the questions of the deputies * . In the coalition agreement, the Union and the SPD agreed that Merkel would face the debate three times a year.

A great opportunity for the opposition and also for "backbenchers" to corner the Chancellor and "grill" her. But what actually happened? A cheerful Merkel answered questions from all factions and even made everyone in the room laugh. Matthias Höhn, Member of the Bundestag of the Left, then had to admit via Twitter: "Despite all the political dissent, you still have to say: you can do it."

In spite of all political dissent, one still has to say: she can. #Merkel #Question Hour #Bundestag

- Matthias Höhn, MdB (@MatthiasHoehn) May 13, 2020

A questioner from the Greens made it particularly clear why her party had been polluting * in the past few weeks. The eco-party had a downturn of up to 24 percent to currently 14 to 16 percent. In some surveys, it is now even behind the SPD.

Corona crisis: Greens MEPs could "grill" Merkel - but only asks side questions

The deputy Ulle Schauws took the floor, spokeswoman for women and queer politics in her parliamentary group. She asked a question about the Corona crisis, but it had nothing to do with the millions of short-time workers *, the fallow tourism sector *, the encroachment on liberties * or the strategies to contain a second wave of viruses *. It did not bring the Chancellor into distress or need to explain - quite the contrary.

The 54-year-old wanted to know: “Are you satisfied with the proportion of women in political decision-making positions who are currently dealing with the fight against the corona crisis? Do you think that the perspective of women is taken sufficiently into account, especially considering that you have not appointed the Minister for Women and Family as a permanent member of your Corona cabinet? ”

In the second part of the question, Schauws addressed Franziska Giffey's non- appointment to the so-called small Corona cabinet, in which Merkel the Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer , Finance Minister Olaf Scholz , Interior Minister Horst Seehofer , Foreign Minister Heiko Maas , Health Minister Jens Spahn and the boss of the Federal Chancellery, Helge Braun . With her two women and four men.

In addition to this core cabinet, however, a large corona cabinet also meets once a week, in which all the relevant ministers participate - Giffey also sits at the table. This is exactly what Merkel pointed out in her answer.  "In this respect, I see no need to catch up," she explained, especially since Franziska Giffey knew how to make her voice heard. The SPD minister always "made clear what she wanted".

Chancellor Merkel confidently ironed out the Corona questions of the Green MPs

Merkel also showed little understanding for the first part of the question. "I have to tell you that I am pleased that there are quite a few professors in the virological field, in the field of public health service and in the ethical fields. I have now got to know a lot of people in connection with counseling. ”Especially when it comes to the health sector, there “ tend to be more women on the committees ” than in business, for example.

Crash of the Greens in the Corona crisis: Habeck has to explain to Lanz

In a way, the side questions of the members of the Bundestag and the way Chancellor Merkel countered them confidently symbolized the role and loss of meaning of the Greens in the Corona crisis . With Markus Lanz *, Federal Chairman Robert Habeck had to  explain on Tuesday evening why his party is currently stumbling. Habeck "would have been treated as an upcoming candidate for chancellor until recently," reminded moderator Lanz. In the ZDF talk show, the top Green politician replied that it was a "wrong view" of his party that it had to be found again in the crisis.

Past crises were mostly times of opposition, the refugee crisis had made the AfD big, and the climate crisis had given his own party a boost. The corona crisis , on the other hand, was an “extraordinary situation”, as a society one had to first unite against an “external enemy, the virus”. This form of the crisis had "every form of opposition involved in the responsibility", one had lined up. The Greens would “not dance around in the front rows” and “we didn't want that at all,” claimed Habeck near Lanz.
