We only lend to the rich. The adage is being verified across the European Union. Germany is carving out the lion's share of State aid authorized by the Commission for each member country intended for its troubled flagships. Of nearly 2,000 billion euros deployed to bail out businesses or provide guarantees approved by Brussels, 51% were spent across the Rhine, followed by France (17%), Italy (15.5%) , far ahead of the United Kingdom (4%, still subject to the rules of the single market during its post-Brexit transition period).

With an economic recovery plan of more than a trillion euros, Germany does not skimp in supporting its companies, like Lufthansa, the tour operator TUI or Deutsche Bahn. Angela Merkel's government quickly put an end to its national dogmas of "debt brake" and "zero deficit" to free up massive resources in the face of the crisis, by drawing on its budgetary reserves and raising capital .
