More than a decade after the military took over the streets of Mexico in the name of the fight against organized crime, the Mexican armed forces can now count on a law that legalizes and strengthens their interference in the internal security of the country. Published on May 10, the decree, signed by Mexican President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador, authorizes the army to ensure twelve police prerogatives, which range from the prevention of crimes to detention, passing by a very broad instruction of "maintenance of social peace and public order ” , until 2024.

The announcement sparked outcry from human rights organizations. The UN said it was "concerned" by the decree. Gathered within the collective Seguridad sin guerra, 300 associations denounced "an advance in militarization in the country" and a government "which is removing the mask" .
