The 80,000 dead mark was crossed last Monday, and that of 50,000 just over three weeks ago (April 24). The United States is by far the country which, according to official reports, has the highest number of deaths and cases detected from the disease.

However, taking into account the size of their population, countries like Belgium, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, France or even Sweden have more deaths per million inhabitants, according to the site Worldometer statistics.

New York State alone accounts for almost a third of the deaths deplored in the United States, with more than 28,300 deaths linked to the disease, according to Johns Hopkins University. State authorities only officially record around 22,700 deaths, but this figure does not include, among others, deaths "probably linked" to the virus, which are several thousand according to New York City.

272,000 people healed

The United States is expected to reach some 112,000 deaths by June 6, according to an average of 20 epidemiological models produced by researchers at the University of Massachusetts. Almost 11.5 million tests have been performed in the country, according to Johns Hopkins University, and some 272,000 people are declared cured.

The pandemic of the new coronavirus has killed more than 316,000 people worldwide since its appearance in December in China, according to a report established by AFP from official sources.
