  • Around 2,000 blood donations are needed every day in Bavaria.
  • To ensure this, the Dachau BRK carried out its blood donation campaign - despite Corona.
  • The rush was great.

Dachau - It was the first Dachau blood donation campaign during the Corona crisis. To ensure that there are still enough blood preparations available during the pandemic, the BRK Dachau has nevertheless arranged the dates. It has not been proven that the coronavirus is transmitted through the blood. However, the blood donation service is careful not to allow people to donate who are either infected or who have had contact with people with Covid 19.

If someone is not sure whether they can donate, Philipp Sosna, who organizes the blood donation for the BRK Dachau, advises to call the hotline of the blood donation service.

Blood donation in Dachau: large crowds

Sosna and his organization team were satisfied with the two donation days. "All donors behaved very well and followed the security measures," says Sosna. The BRK registered 428 potential donors on both days, 35 were not allowed to donate. Because the rush was so big and everyone had to keep a distance of one and a half meters, a queue quickly formed up on the street. "50 percent were in the building, the others had to wait outside," says Sosna.

In order to ease the cold a little for the people waiting outside, the BRK team provided them with tea and blankets. The BRK had built a pavilion in front of the entrance. The temperature of the donors was measured there. In this way, people with an elevated temperature above 37.5 degrees could be excluded from the donation beforehand. "We only had to send two away," says Sosna. People dammed down the stairs in the building. So the registration could only gradually bring people in from outside.

Blood donors had to wait an average of two hours

The BRK and the blood donation service have increased the number of staff at all the stations that the donors have to go through. "We needed more staff to inform the donors and to see if people kept the distances," says Philipp Sosna. "But we didn't have to say anything often." Most donors would have been very understanding. "A few complained about the long waiting times, but you also have to take them into account when you donate blood," says Sosna. On average, the donors waited two hours.

Everyone had to wear a face mask inside the building - including the staff. In addition, the BRK has regularly disinfected contact surfaces and made disinfection options available to the donors. The ten donor beds were all one and a half meters apart. After the donation there was usually always a snack that the donors could eat there. "Instead, we prepared lunch packs that the donors could either eat in a room with a limited number of people or take home with them," says Sosna. Basically, he was very happy with the blood donation. "We tried to make it as pleasant as possible for the donors and we had mostly positive reactions," says Sosna.
