Stopped dead by the Covid-19, multilateral diplomacy discovered an unexpected collateral victim: the French language. While representatives of 193 countries in New York were busy "switching" their exchanges by videoconference, English suddenly took on overwhelming weight in meetings of the United Nations Security Council.
To remedy this state of affairs, France has announced that these sessions, during its monthly presidency in June, will be inaugurated in the language of Molière. "By going to video meetings, the Council has kept its transparency and its ability to make decisions," wrote French Ambassador Nicolas de Rivière on May 15 on Twitter. The only victim is unfortunately multilingualism. We should have a solution soon. In any case, my intention is to conduct our presidency in June in French. ”
