Afghan security forces said Tuesday they had repelled a Taliban attack on Kunduz, a strategic town in northern Afghanistan, which the insurgents had held briefly in the past.

" At around 01:00 am (2030 GMT Monday), the Taliban attacked the city of Kunduz from several directions, " the Afghan Defense Ministry said in a statement. " Thanks to the support of the Air Force, their attack was repelled by our security forces ."
" The attacks have been repelled and our outposts resumed, " said Hadi Jamal, an Afghan army spokesman for the north of the country. One soldier was killed and three injured, he added.
Defense Ministry spokesman Fawad Awan said 40 insurgents were killed and 50 wounded in the fighting. A Kunduz police officer, Dil Agha, also told AFP more than 40 Taliban killed and more than 60 injured. “ The situation is under control. People shouldn't worry, "he said.
Afghan and Taliban forces often exaggerate the losses inflicted on the enemy. The Taliban could not be reached for comment.
