These motions, one from the right, the other from a pro-European party, should not get enough votes to bring the minister down, according to media reports. The opposition criticizes Mr. Bonafede for not being up to his job, the two motions criticizing him in particular about the release of mafia during confinement for health reasons. The release of elderly and unhealthy criminals during the pandemic had sparked controversy, forcing the Minister of Justice to back down.

The most controversial cases are those of three sponsors, detained under the so-called " 41 bis " regime , that is to say a very strict detention reserved for dangerous criminals and which makes it possible to isolate them from possible accomplices or mafia contacts. " The image of a government which would have widely opened the doors of prisons, including for the most dangerous prisoners, is completely false, " rebelled Mr. Bonafede during the Senate debate preceding the vote. " The magistrates have applied the laws in force (...) for over 50 years that no one had ever changed, " he said.

The majority in power, composed mainly of the M5S and the Democratic Party (PD, center-left), has the necessary votes in the Senate to avoid the fall of its minister, but it must also rely on the Italia Viva (IV) party. the former head of government Matteo Renzi who, with his 17 senators can decide the fate of the executive. Mr. Renzi had adopted an ambiguous attitude in recent days, not making it clear whether or not his senators would vote for the no-confidence motion and raising the tension.

Wednesday, during his speech in the middle of the day before the senators, he finally lifted the ambiguity and announced that his group would vote against the motions of no confidence. The head of government Giuseppe Conte and the main officials of the PD and the M5S had clearly warned their difficult ally, Mr. Renzi, that if the vote of no confidence was voted, it would be a crisis of government that it would provoke. An early vote is not in the interest of Mr. Renzi whose party is credited with 2% to 3% of the voting intentions in the polls.
