Summer vacation is approaching, but it is still not clear what will happen to vacation 2020. How do Germans view it and what is the mood like when it comes to vacation?

  • Pack your swimming trunks ... Mouthguards and disinfectants: The current situation does not necessarily suggest that  summer vacation 2020 will be possible .
  • Nevertheless, the Germans' desire to travel continues despite the Coronavirus * - and there is hope that the travel industry will soon be relaxed again .
  • According to a survey, 94 percent of those surveyed want to go on vacation * within the next twelve months.

The wanderlust of many Germans could be alleviated this summer despite the corona pandemic. The global travel warning should not be extended after June 14th. Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) will then gradually ease the travel obstacles, at least within Europe, and make holidays for German travelers possible again.

The dream vacation of the Germans in Corona times

A current HolidayCheck survey among German holidaymakers shows that even if the Corona summer is in the tension between hope and anxiety, the Germans' desire to travel is still unshakable.

Even if the holiday in your own country has advantages for purely logistical reasons this year: For 44 percent of vacationers, the dream destination for 2020 is in another European country . German vacationers particularly like to dream to Greece: 41 percent of those surveyed can imagine traveling there on their next vacation. Spain is the destination of choice for 39 percent and 34 percent would like to spend their vacation in Germany.

Long-distance travel is also far from being written off : almost a third moves further away. The motive for the holiday also plays a decisive role. 64 percent of vacationers want to spend their days off on the beach and use them to relax by the sea. To get there, the overwhelming majority (95%) still use the plane as their first choice of transportation.

Relaxation plays a major role in choosing accommodation. 68 percent say they want to spend their next vacation in a hotel.

Unwavering desire to travel among the Germans

The survey clearly shows that people are still looking forward to their vacation . Even the bad experiences of the past few weeks don't change that. 54 percent have already had to cancel or rebook their trip, another 17 percent currently do not know whether their booked trip will take place. Due to the Corona crisis, 13 percent could not even start planning their vacation.

Great need for security for a relaxed summer vacation 2020

Since the advent of the corona virus, almost 40 percent of Germans have found traveling abroad to be significantly less secure than before. For a carefree booking, 59 percent would like flexible cancellation options . For 60 percent, clear information about the cancellation conditions and the procedure for the reimbursement of canceled trips is important. In addition, 53 percent would like official information on the current status of the corona virus in the holiday region. For more than half, a travel destination with a stable health system is an important decision criterion. And the trustworthiness of the tour operator also plays a major role with 49 percent.

Reserves for the best time of the year

Even if the Corona crisis hits the Germans economically: The money for travel is available. More than three quarters of the respondents save their travel budget, which they could not currently spend, for the next trip. Just under a quarter of it is spent elsewhere: You invest the money for purchases at home and in the garden. 20 percent of those surveyed save their vacated vacation budget as nest egg for further turbulent times.

Summer vacation 2020 despite Corona: border openings depend on the regulations of the target countries

Austria : Germany and Austria want to start mutual tourism again as quickly as possible. Unless there are setbacks in containing the corona pandemic, the common border is slated to reopen on June 15th. Theoretically, nothing would stand in the way of a vacation in Austria: the restaurants are already open there, hotels and museums are to follow by the end of May.

Netherlands : Entry restrictions for Germans never existed in the Netherlands, even in the Corona crisis. From June 1st, restaurants and cafés will again be able to welcome at least a few guests, and museums and theaters may reopen. From July 1st, campsites and holiday parks will again be open to holidaymakers without restrictions - previously under certain hygiene requirements.

Denmark : Denmark still keeps its border closed, although Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen recently showed himself ready to allow German tourists to enter soon, for example with a rental contract for a holiday home or a hotel reservation. The government plans to take further steps by early June.

Italy : Museums, bars and restaurants are opening again, swimming pools and sports facilities are to follow in the middle of the month. Italy wants to allow tourists from the Schengen area to enter without quarantine from June 3. Travel between the Italian regions should then be allowed again. However, there is still no general start date for hotel openings. The popular holiday region of South Tyrol wants to allow the operation of hotels and holiday apartments again from May 25th.

Greece : Sights such as the Athens Acropolis and numerous beaches are open again. German vacationers have to be patient: Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis says he wants to do everything so that the season for foreign tourists can start on July 1st.

France : Again, the border should be open to travelers from Germany without restrictions from June 15, but the situation is still unclear. The first beaches opened again, but the regional authorities decide on further steps. There is still no decision from Paris regarding hotels and campsites. The French can now plan their summer vacation, but only within a radius of 100 kilometers from where they live.

Spain : Even if the first easing of the curfew and flights from Germany to the Balearic Islands give hope to holidaymakers, it is still unclear how things will go in Germany's favorite holiday destination. Entry from the Schengen area is currently almost impossible - and if so, then only with a subsequent two-week quarantine. The regulation is to apply until the end of the state of emergency, which the government in Madrid now plans to extend until June 7. The regional president of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol, had recently expressed hope of being able to receive "tourist groups in a controlled form in July".

Turkey : Vacation trips to Turkey will probably not be possible until further notice. "We hope that Turkey can soon become a target country for German and European tourists again," said Foreign Minister Maas after consulting with his Turkish counterpart. "However, we have to evaluate this in due course and according to strict health criteria."
