Something quite annoying that we have discovered during this epidemic of COVID-19 is that FaceID is not the ideal unlock mode when you are wearing a mask-covered face. Although this biometric protection system works with sunglasses, it is not as ideal when something covers the face. It takes a few seconds for the system to realize that it will not be possible to identify the user and instead offer the option of entering a PIN or password.

The latest iOS update, released today, fixes this.

More or less.

FaceID will still not function as an identification system but now, upon detecting that a user is wearing a mask, the phone will directly display the screen to enter the PIN or password.

To update to the latest version, unlock your iPhone or iPad and navigate to the Settings app. The app is likely to be on your home screen and easy to identify because it shows a series of gears.

Then scroll down the list and tap on the General option (it also has a gear next to it). On the next screen, near the top, select Software Update and you're done. The device will start downloading the latest update.

This update, 13.5, also includes new stickers with Memojis (the fun virtual avatars to use in conversations), the option to share file folders on iCloud Drive and it is also the first version of iOS that includes support for the traceability API of COVID-19.
