The CHP stated that the first case involved 4 women, aged between 6 and 54 years old. They ate the sandwiches purchased from the "Hong Family Handmade-Hong Ruizhen Sandwich" at the Nan Fung Centre in Tsuen Wan yesterday, about 8 to 12 hours later Symptoms of gastroenteritis appear one after another, including symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. The other case involved three women, aged between 5 and 34 years old, who ate the same brand of sandwiches purchased in the same store yesterday and had similar symptoms about 7 to 14 hours later.

All affected persons have sought medical treatment in the Accident and Emergency Department of Tuen Mun Hospital. No hospitalization is required. The situation is stable. A CHP spokesman said that the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has been notified of the incident and the investigation is continuing. The spokesman also urged that food stored at room temperature for too long will cause pathogens to multiply and produce toxins. The public should avoid eating cooked or ready-to-eat food that has been kept at room temperature for several hours.

The Center for Health Protection reminds citizens of the following points:

• patronize reliable and licensed restaurants;

• Avoid eating raw seafood;

• Choose cold dishes carefully, including sashimi, sushi and oysters at the buffet;

• When eating hot pot or barbecue, make sure the food is thoroughly cooked before eating;

• During the cooking process, carefully handle and thoroughly separate raw and cooked food;

• Use two sets of chopsticks and utensils to handle raw and cooked food separately;

• Do not patronize unlicensed food stalls;

• Drink boiled water;

• Do not try to use salt, vinegar, wine and Japanese mustard for sterilization, because there is no sterilization effect; and

• Wash hands before eating and after going to the toilet.
