In an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Patten said that China is using other countries to focus on combating the outbreak of the new coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) to engage in bullying and harassment in other regions.
He said that Britain should discuss with its allies how Hong Kong can continue to be an important international city in Asia, and whether China can be trusted to keep its promises. However, he pointed out that there have been multiple preliminaries that this is not the case.
The British Foreign Ministry also responded to the "Hong Kong version of the National Security Law" on the 21st, saying that the British side is paying close attention to the situation and expecting China to respect the rights, freedoms and high degree of autonomy of Hong Kong people.
