In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, more and more swimming pools are opening their doors. To keep the risk of infection as low as possible, new rules apply.

  • Despite the Corona * crisis , the outdoor pools in most of the German federal states are gradually opening up
  • However, there will not be a normal summer season.
  • In most places, bathers have to be prepared for many rules and regulations .
  • Here you will find the basic facts about the corona virus * and the corona news from Germany. We also offer you the current number of cases in Germany * on a map. The following recommendations for corona protective measures * are currently available.

Munich / Düsseldorf - In the shadow of the corona pandemic , the outdoor pools in Germany are gradually starting into what is likely to be an extremely unusual summer season. The open-air swimming pools in North Rhine-Westphalia have reopened since this Wednesday (May 20). In Saxony they have been open again since May 15th, Berlin wants to move in on May 25th - but some countries, such as Bavaria, do not yet want to decide whether the outdoor pools will open this season.

In addition to the question of whether and when outdoor pools will open again this summer, everyday life between the lawn, pool and diving tower is also unusual. Splashing only at a distance, visits only after registration and long queues in front of the pool: Outdoor pool guests and the staff will have to observe some rules in future because of the risk of corona infection *

Outdoor pools open despite the Corona crisis - there are online bookings and time slots

A quick swim lap after work will not be fully possible this summer, explains Christian Ochsenbauer, Managing Director of the German Bathing Association (DGfB). Many baths want to offer season tickets in order to channel the flow of visitors . One example are the establishments of the “Kölnbäder”, where customers can only enter with e-tickets. "Spontaneous visits are not planned," said press spokeswoman Franziska Graalmann. By registering online , the outdoor pools can also kill two birds with one stone, because this not only avoids overcrowding. The baths would also meet their obligation to provide evidence, Graalmann explains. Online registrations are therefore also planned in Berlin.

Outdoor pools open despite the Corona crisis - keeping your distance is essential

Whether in the swimming pool , standing in line at the diving platform or on the lawn - keeping your distance is the order of the day. For this reason, markings are made on the floor in Düsseldorf or Cologne, and in some pools the swimming lanes should only be allowed to swim in one direction. The pool noodles, which are around 1.50 meters long, also serve as spacers . The DGfB also recommends limiting the number of people in the pool . “It can happen that people have to queue in front of the pool,” says Ochsenbauer. The known distance and contact rules also apply to the lawn.

Outdoor pools open despite the Corona crisis - lifeguards are facing new tasks

In the “Kölnbäder” company, the staff are encouraged to check the distance rules and to warn them if necessary, says spokeswoman Graalmann. If you do not want to adhere to the new requirements, you have to leave the bathroom. Security forces should also ensure that no larger groups form on the meadows. DGfB managing director Ochsenbauer also suggests that the lifeguards count the bathers and block the pools if necessary

All new rules are designed to ensure that the corona virus does not spread. In addition to keeping a distance, disinfection is now very important. Sanitary facilities should be cleaned more often , in Berlin the changing rooms and shower rooms remain completely closed . Many baths also plan to shutdown operations every few hours to perform basic cleaning, reports Ochsenbauer. If you are worried that the virus could spread through the water, you can breathe a sigh of relief: According to the Federal Environment Agency, filtration and disinfection mean that viruses are reliably deactivated.

Outdoor pools open despite the Corona crisis - and are trying to restore normality

Despite the Corona crisis , some swimming pool operators are trying to create something normal. In most of the pools, little visitors * should be able to romp in the children's paddling pool, says Ochsenbauer. As a rule, the obligatory swimming pool fries can also be sniffed out because the gastronomy is open in many places. In compliance with the distance rules, attractions such as diving platforms and slides should also be accessible to visitors. Because besides hygiene * and safety, there is also another matter, says Ochsenbauer: "Quality of life".
