Viktor Orban's political course has long been a source of irritation in the EU. Hungary's Prime Minister has now taken up the issue of refugees. Here he sees sinister forces actively, directed by a financial investor in the USA.

Budapest (dpa) - Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused the EU institutions and the American financial investor George Soros of wanting to force European countries into debt by fueling migration crises.

The "Brussels bureaucrats" would "be in the pocket of someone named George Soros," the right-wing politician said on Friday on state radio.

"You need a migration crisis," he continued. "If there is a migration crisis, governments get into trouble (...) and they need credit. But they have the money. They want to lend, if possible at reasonable interest rates, because they love it." He did not provide evidence of his allegations.

Soros (89) comes from Hungary and survived the Holocaust in his home country as a teenager of Jewish origin. As a financial investor, he later made a fortune in the United States. It supports humanitarian initiatives worldwide, including organizations that work for human rights and an open society.

The image of the rich Jew who lends money and leads fellow citizens or entire states to "interest bondage" is an old anti-Semitic stereotype.

In the past, Orban has continued to spread a different conspiracy theory: Soros and his "network" would have triggered the 2015 refugee migration to flood Europe with Muslim migrants, thereby wiping out the Christian and national identity of the European peoples.
