Summer vacations for German citizens seem to be within reach again. Prime Minister Markus Söder even wants to support travelers financially.

  • The corona crisis hit the travel industry hard.
  • Due to blocked borders, canceled flights and worldwide travel warnings *, vacations were out of the question for a long time.
  • But things are slowly moving again

Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) holds out the prospect of an end to the global travel warning on June 14 and advises colleagues from popular holiday destinations of Germans * such as Spain, Italy or Greece on a coordinated approach to opening borders for tourists.

Söder is considering vacation vouchers for travelers within Germany

Markus Söder (CSU) also wants to support the vacation plans of the Germans - at least when vacationing in Germany. "The infrastructure is there, health care is perfect," he said at a party board meeting. That's why he wants to financially help domestic tourists who "don't have that much money". This could be implemented with vacation vouchers or tax deductibility of travel expenses . In principle, he was also open to other possible solutions. With financial incentives, he would like to "bring some relief for the industry and bring joy to the people".

However, the Prime Minister is less convinced of Maas' plans for an early summer vacation outside the German borders: "I do not think like Heiko Maas that it is so easy that we can already make plans today that we will be back in Italy in a month or are in Spain or in France ". None of these countries have previously announced vacation opportunities for tourists. So it was too early to talk about it.

Holiday vouchers for domestic tourists: criticism from the Greens

Söder's plan for holiday vouchers with the Bavarian Greens parliamentary group leader, Ludwig Hartmann, met with little favor: "Accommodation in beautiful Bavaria will be booked up quickly this year even without Söders holiday vouchers." In his view, a cheap train ticket would be a better solution to help Bavarian citizens travel. This way, they could go on a cheaper day trip even without an expensive hotel stay - and it would also be environmentally friendly.
