City Council: "The State Building Authority still owes us something"

To maintain the provisional bicycle bridge between Schongau and Peiting for the time being, this was again requested in a city council meeting. The State Building Authority in Weilheim does not see the need, but nevertheless offers talks. There is still a little time left: the reduction planned for the end of May has been postponed to the end of August.

Schongau - "The State Building Authority still owes us a little because of the delays at the Mühl Canal Bridge." City Councilor Friedrich Zeller (SPD) has a very clear opinion, which he recently expressed again in the City Council meeting. The provisional bicycle and pedestrian bridge that the building authority built during the work on the Mühlkanal bridge should remain until there is a decent solution for crossing Dießener Straße, so he wishes.

Zeller favors the so-called "fairytale forest bridge". The current makeshift bridge was owned by the construction company, but perhaps it could be replaced, Zeller had suggested at the meeting. "The Schongauer and Peitinger have had to be so patient, now the building authority could accommodate us."

Scheduled appointment with Peiting's mayor

"It is not quite as simple as that," Mayor Falk Sluyterman had already indicated at the meeting that there were various arguments against this from the building authorities. At the meeting, however, he agreed to make an appointment promptly with the new mayor of Peitingen, Peter Ostenrieder, and to tackle the topic again.

City Hall bosses: Provisional cycle path better than guidance directly on the street

That would be the second attempt in this direction: a joint letter that he and the then Peitingen City Hall chief Michael Asam had written to the Bauamt in Weilheim had already been sent to the chief construction director Uwe Fritsch at the beginning of March. "This provisional cycle path and the makeshift bridge are always better and safer than the previous guidance of the cyclists directly on the street," said Sluyterman and Asam.

State building authority: Temporary bridge unsuitable in the long run

The focus is on the promotion of everyday cycling, according to the negative response from the State Building Authority. This means more of a retrofitting of cycle paths on federal and state roads. Only where it is unavoidable and significantly more economical could remote bike paths be financed by the construction agency. "The provisional bridge in Schongau is unsuitable for regular and permanent cycling due to its narrow width," said Fritsch in the reply letter.

Peitinger Straße is to be expanded in urban areas

Christoph Prause, project manager from the State Building Office in Weilheim, also sees no need to maintain the bridge. The new Mühlkanal bridge is already generously laid out with a combined cycle and footpath: 2.50 meters are provided for this on both sides. The cyclists in the direction of Peiting are then to be guided to the Lech side in a further step after leaving town. In the near future, Peitinger Straße is also to be expanded in urban areas - including the UPM junction. There are already various expansion options for this, adds Fritsch.

The next step was an agreement with the city of Schongau on the favored expansion solution, the road expansion should be realized in the next few years.

Residents also have a say

In addition to the fact that the bridge belongs to the construction company, that it is too narrow and unsuitable, the city of Schongau also has to pay for the maintenance, according to the State Building Authority. The path on the Lech also belongs to the water management administration. And the residents had a say. "The residents are permanently burdened by the street on one side and would then also be from the Lech side", Prause points out.

A conversation with the city of Schongau and the market town will be offered in any case, an appointment should even be made at short notice, Fritsch emphasizes. There is still a bit of air: Actually there was already a dismantling date in late May, this has now been postponed to after August 21.

Not all city councilors are behind the provisional bridge

Incidentally, the entire city council is obviously not at all behind the preservation of the provisional bicycle bridge, as was shown in the meeting: "The bridge is not practical for cyclists", Bettina Buresch (Greens) complained. It was smooth, too narrow, you had to dismount. And the way is also a detour. “If you are still cycling analog, this is not a practical bike path. I don't see the point of spending money on it. "

Peiting's Mayor Peter Ostenrieder would like to take part in the appointment, but also question whether the citizens would rather cycle along the street. "This bike path would be open and visible."
