Linger, browse, dream about the time of Thomas Mann in Bad Tölz: A “reading oasis” now invites you to do so. You can even take books home from there.

Bad Tölz - The Thomas Mann Trail in Bad Tölz has one more attraction: On Wednesday, at the level of the Klammerweiher, a “reading oasis” was opened, which fits seamlessly into the offer of the roughly three-kilometer circular route, which follows in the footsteps of the Nobel laureate leads through the city.

In a converted telephone booth, there are now books by and about Thomas Mann, which every citizen can read on site on the specially installed bench. Those interested can also take the books home with them. At the same time, every user is invited to place well-preserved books in the “reading oasis” and thus contribute to the free exchange of reading material. Of course, this does not have to be literature about Thomas Mann. As Gabi Peters, the city marketing director of ideas, explains, books from all genres can be found in the revamped telephone booth: from novels to crime novels to children's books.

From his country house in Bad Tölz, Thomas Mann looked at the staple pond

“I always liked the idea of free bookcases like this,” explains Peters. In the course of the plans for the Thomas Mann Way last year, the decision was then made to install the “reading oasis”, as it would make a wonderful connection to the writer. The location was deliberately chosen for the peg pond. Because in Thomas Mann's lifetime, the view of his estate onto the pond was unobstructed and the water was a bathing place that was often used by the family.

Third Mayor Christof Botzenhart, who officially handed over the “reading oasis” to its destination, is very pleased with the expansion of the Thomas Mann Way: “People should read Mann. This offer underlines this approach. You can immerse yourself in your work in this authentic place. ”It also emphasizes the importance of reading in general.

According to corona restrictions, books can now be exchanged at a public closet

Thomas Mann expert Martin Hake, who contributed a lot of knowledge about Thomas Mann in Bad Tölz, is also enthusiastic about the “reading oasis”: “Here you can dream of a man and imagine what it was like when his wife and children have bathed in the pond. "

According to Gabi Peters, there are two reasons to officially open the bookcase right now: First, the relaxation of the corona restriction now allows public use. On the other hand, the virtual Thomas Mann Festival, which the city offers at www.facebook.com/thomas-mann.badtoelz, is still running until Saturday.

Literature fans will also find what they are looking for in Sachsenkam: A public bookcase was also opened here a few months ago.
