A 32-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the stabbing murder of his father, Dwight Powers, 72, who was participating in a video conference via Zoom from his home in New York State. According to the police account, several participants of the approximately 20 who were part of the call missed Powers and some were able to see part of the attack on their son, who stabbed him during the conversation.
According to a statement from the Suffolk County Police collected by The New York Times, the events occurred last Thursday around noon in the town of Amityville (about 9,500 inhabitants) about 50 kilometers east of New York.
Some participants provided a description of the attacker, Thomas Scully-Powers. Several of them saw through the screen that their conversation partner was falling "and then they heard that he was breathing rapidly," Detective Kevin Beyrer, of the Suffolk police, told the local newspaper Newsday . "It is horrible that they had to witness something like that," he added.
Immediately afterwards, several participants in the video call notified the police, who located the attacker less than an hour later and detained him. According to the police report, the man was injured after jumping from the second-floor window of his Dixon Avenue home, where he lived with his father, and was taken to the hospital. He is charged with second-degree murder and will be charged as soon as he recovers from his injuries.
