Berlin - CDU boss Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has confirmed that there will be no special party convention for the election of her successor . “The party conference will take place in December 2020. With a view to the Corona regulations, it is clear that there will be no extraordinary party conference before the summer, ”she said in an interview published on Sunday on n-tv.de

Corona crisis: AKK's successor should have been elected in April - now it is December

It should also be discussed with the candidates that it makes no sense to hold a special party conference a few weeks before a regular party convention. According to information from the editorial network Germany, Kramp-Karrenbauer had already expressed a similar opinion a few days ago at a video exchange with CDU district chairmen. As early as April, a special party convention should have determined a successor for Kramp-Karrenbauer . However, it was postponed due to the corona pandemic.

In addition to the foreign politician Norbert Röttgen *, the former Union faction leader Friedrich Merz * and NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet * are the most promising candidates for the CDU chairmanship. Kramp-Karrenbauer had in February their retreat as party leader announced . This was preceded by an electoral scandal in Thuringia (further information in the video below), in which CDU state deputies elected the FDP politician Thomas Kemmerich as Thuringian prime minister side by side with AfD deputies.

AKK's departure is strongly related to the Thuringian election scandal

This process triggered a tremendous political earthquake across Germany and in many other European countries , after which Kemmerich resigned shortly after his election as Prime Minister. In the meantime, his predecessor Bodo Ramelow (left) * has taken over again and announced a special route for the federal state in the middle of Germany in the midst of the Corona crisis.
