(CNN Spanish) - A United Nations report on the situation of the pandemic in Venezuela reveals that only 16,577 PCR tests have been carried out to detect covid-19.

This would represent 2.3% of the total number of tests carried out.

According to this study, the government of the questioned president, Nicolás Maduro, reports 697,691 diagnostic tests for covid-19 until May 21, which "correspond to rapid tests with limited sensitivity" and represent 97.7% of the tests carried out.

According to data collected by the UN, the National Institute of Hygiene increased its processing capacity to 600 PCR tests per day, “in previous reports they placed it in 100 newspapers. A capacity that contrasts with that of countries such as neighboring Colombia, where more than 2,000 tests are carried out daily. ”

The questioned Maduro government has not offered details of how many rapid tests are positive of the total they carry out and that must then be verified with said test.

CNN contacted the Ministry of Communication and Information to find out their reaction to this report but, so far, no response has been obtained.

Miguel Pizarro, appointed as Commissioner for the United Nations on behalf of the President of the National Assembly and recognized as President in Charge of Venezuela by at least 55 countries, Juan Guaidó recalled that "the World Health Organization recommends not using rapid tests to detect covid-19 as these could give false results and expose citizens to the virus. "

The also deputy for the opposition party Primero Justicia stresses that "the UN urges the use of PCR tests as they yield more truthful results."

Pizarro considers that it is false that Venezuela is the most efficient country in terms of diagnostic tests and that "taking into account only the PCR tests, it can be determined that the number of daily tests is well below the average for Latin American nations "

The parliamentarian warned that lying endangers the population.
