The city of Starnberg has all streets in the city and in the districts recorded using modern technology. For this reason, the Berlin company "eagle eye" has been on the road with a measuring vehicle for these days.

Starnberg - No, this vehicle really cannot be overlooked. Painted orange-silver metallic, with a large orange-colored structure on the roof to which numerous cameras are attached: A transporter with Berlin license plates is currently driving through Starnberg. His mission: to record the status and condition of the roads. The client is the city administration, the contractor for the Berlin technology provider "eagle eye", which means eagle eye.

The company specializes in capturing streets and paths in great detail and processing the data obtained. "The city of Starnberg uses the data from the precise documentation as the basis for the construction of a modern street register and for the introduction of a maintenance concept," town hall spokeswoman Lena Choi said in a press release. "With its help, the city administration will be able to specifically manage, plan and renovate its road infrastructure in the future."

Data saves time and money later

Where previously an on-site appointment has been required and where analog and digital maps have to be consulted, a look at this cadastre will be sufficient in future, which should also form the basis of a sustainable conservation concept. "In the future, the responsible employees can plan the road maintenance at a glance and, if necessary, inspect each road section directly on the computer," says Mayor Patrick Janik. "This saves time and money for on-site assessments and makes our work even more effective."

Janik explains in an interview with the Starnberg Mercury that it involves repair or refurbishment work as well as traffic policy considerations, for example whether the existing road space is sufficient to create cycle lanes or paths. Incidentally, nobody should have concerns about data protection, as was the case with the recordings for Google Street View. The mayor says that houses and buildings are not captured by the cameras.

The vehicle is equipped with a total of ten cameras. "At the same time, they capture the street space and record the traffic facilities", Lena Choi explains the procedure. The car is equipped with special sensors, with the help of which the road surfaces are detected while driving. The data acquisition is dependent on the weather, but would only take a few days.

"We strive to generate as much specialist data for Starnberg as possible," says Janik. "At the same time, we attach great importance to very good data quality, because only in this way can we really use the results in a variety of ways."

This is exactly where “eagle eye” sees its competence. The company's own vehicles "had technology that combined several processes in an innovative, unique way," says the company's website. According to its own statements, the company has implemented more than 400 projects with its technology since 2008. It is not yet certain when the data will be processed in Starnberg to the extent that it can be used.
