(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 27 - The pandemic has a "devastating and disproportionate" effect on young workers. More than one in six boys stopped working because of Covid, according to an analysis by the ILO (the World Labor Organization). Those who are still employed have seen a 23% reduction in working hours.
Overall, the health emergency is leading to an estimated loss of 10.7% of hours worked worldwide, in the second quarter of 2020, compared to the last quarter of 2019, equal to 305 million full-time positions.
Almost all the workers (94%) live in the country with some type of restrictive measure in the workplace for the containment of infections.
Young people are the most exposed to this crisis due to the type of activities they carry out: 77% are in the informal economy (the lamedia for the over 25 is around 60%) and in over 4 sudieci cases it operates in the most affected sectors, where 178 million boys are employed. Furthermore, even before the crisis, there were 267 million young people who did not study or work (the so-called Neet, not in employment, education or training), including almost 68 million unemployed.
The health emergency has made life even more difficult for students. Half of them expect to complete their studies late, while 10% doubt that they can complete them altogether. Whether they work or not, since the start of the pandemic, the majority of young people interviewed by the ILO say they have become vulnerable to attacks of anxiety and depression.
From ILO therefore comes a call for a "urgent and large-scale political response to avoid long-term damage to young people in terms of training and prospects in the labor market". In particular, there is a recommendation to initiatives aimed at young people to be included within a "inclusive and forward-looking" work policy framework and connected to the revitalization plans. The support should be channeled, according to the organization, "in those sectors capable of creating recent and productive work", and accompanied by widespread tests and the linking of contagions, which can lead to halving the lost work hours.
