  • The number of bicycle accidents in Munich is increasing.
  • The death drama at Nockherberg brought many people to the attention of the topic - but the situation was explosive before.
  • Andreas Groh from ADFC explains where it is particularly dangerous.
  • There is more on this topic in our app.

Munich - "In our view, there is an urgent need to expand the cycling infrastructure on many roads," says ADFC boss Andreas Groh . "Above all to increase traffic safety, but also to cope with the constantly increasing number of cyclists." Groh mentions the Isar cycle path as an example, especially the section between Prinzregentenstraße in the north and Hefner-Alteneck-Straße in the south. Another very specific demand: "There is also a need for improvements on Lindwurmstrasse, the area between Sendlinger Tor and Lindwurm underpass is particularly critical." A cyclist was hit by a truck directly at Sendlinger-Tor-Platz around the previous year - as is so often the case Turn.

The Altstadt-Radlring * required by the Radentscheid München would, according to Groh, bring improvements on the Sonnenstrasse. Better cycle paths would also be needed on Nymphenburger Straße . A cycle expressway on Ludwig- and Leopoldstraße c could help. There are currently critical situations here - especially in front of the Ludwigskirche, where a construction site is currently also causing additional dangers.

Almost 6500 cycling accidents in 2028

The many accidents involving cyclists (6471 in 2018, including 2520 with personal injury) are of course also related to the high and increasing number of cyclists . "In combination with a non-compliant and insufficiently dimensioned bike infrastructure, this is of course particularly unfavorable," complains Groh.

If there are also individual errors, problems are inevitable - such as recently on Oberföhringer Straße b, where a cyclist fell on the pedestrian path because a car came out of the exit from the underground car park she was passing. The police do not know the exact background, there is no cycle path at this point. Basically, Groh says: The goal must be that more cycling is possible and at the same time the number of accidents is reduced.

Many turning accidents with cyclists in Munich

Statistics also show that turning accidents make up a large part of the accidents caused by cars or trucks - between 30 and 50 percent. Groh: “These accidents can be avoided with improved visual relationships. That means: the bike path or the bike traffic must be seen and perceived well in time by the vehicle and from the opposite direction before the junction. ”

Parked cars, advertising pillars or billboards all too often restricted the view. On the other hand, better technology could help, such as the long-required turning assistants or Trixi mirrors. Groh: "People will always make mistakes, but forgiving infrastructure must be able to deal with them."

Just a few days ago, a bicycle accident that was fatal showed how dangerous cycling can be in Munich *. Now the public is looking for someone involved in the accident.
