The Montessori school in Freising now has a photovoltaic system. It is not only a contribution to climate protection, but also an educational facility. The whole thing is financed through citizen participation.

Freising - The Montessori school in Freising is now getting its own solar power. On Wednesday, representatives of the association and BEG, the citizens' energy cooperative Freisinger Land, inaugurated the PV system on the roof of the school, which is now in operation.

"Our contribution to climate protection"

The decision to use the system was made around a year and a half ago. At a specially convened meeting, the members of the Montessori Association voted for the project in January 2019. "We don't do this because we could save money here," emphasizes Montessori board member Alceste Kapfer-Avonda. "This is our contribution to climate protection."

Supervisory Board member Florian Fischer also fell into the same horn. "Montessori is a role model and takes responsibility," he said. However, photovoltaics were not only created here to produce electricity. "This is also an educational facility that should be used in the lessons of our children." Fischer's conclusion: "It's great that we can always improve our great building."

In fact, the students should have seen the construction of the facility up close. "Then Corona got in the way," Alceste Kapfer-Avonda reported. "However, we did not want to postpone the construction either." At least Florian Fischer's son is already looking forward to the new modules, as the Supervisory Board reported. "He thinks green electricity is great because we will have the sun for a long time and it will not harm the environment."

BEG members can purchase shares

The 100 kv system easily suffices for its own energy needs, as Andreas Henze, Chairman of the BEG, explained. "This enables the school to produce more electricity than it has ever used." The installation of the PV modules cost around 100,000 euros, he continued. The plant is to be financed through public participation. Anyone who becomes a member of the BEG can purchase shares and benefit from the interest. A share costs 1000 euros.

"We want to motivate parents to participate," emphasized Henze. "Not because of the money, but so that they are interested in what is going on here." However, since corona-related no citizen participation has taken place so far, the cooperative will finance until a corresponding meeting is allowed again.
